Can I Get an IIM Call With Low 10th, 12th or Graduation Marks?

Can I get an IIM call with low Class 10, Class 12 or graduation marks? CAT eligibility and IIM admission criteria explained.
Understand how Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks and CAT performance affect IIM interview shortlisting and admission chances.
THE SHORT ANSWER: Yes, you can get an IIM call with low Class 10, Class 12, or graduation marks—but not equally at every institute. Eligibility thresholds and scoring formulas are different, so your chances depend on where you apply and how you perform in CAT.

The two myths students should stop believing

“Academics don’t matter, just get 99+ percentile.” Not true. Some IIMs give substantial marks to school results when creating an interview shortlist. In those cases, CAT performance alone may not fully offset weaker academics.

“With 65% in Class 12, forget the IIMs.” Also not true. Many policies allow eligible candidates to compete with a lower academic score. Others assign less importance to school marks during initial shortlisting.

The crucial distinction is between receiving an IIM interview call and receiving a final admission offer. Those are two different decisions, often made using different formulas.

The thing almost nobody tells you

Weak board marks can hurt most before the interview—at the stage where candidates are ranked using recorded scores. Once shortlisted, interview performance and other final-selection components can change the competitive picture. Your old percentages are fixed, but your CAT preparation, institute selection, and interview readiness are not.

How an IIM call is actually decided

QUICK ANSWER: Most processes have an initial eligibility check, an interview shortlist, and a final merit list. Each step has its own rules; a minimum CAT cut-off is a gateway, not a guaranteed call.

Stage 1 — The interview shortlist

After CAT results, each participating institute evaluates eligible applicants using its published formula. Components may include overall or sectional CAT scaled scores, Class 10 and 12 percentages, graduation performance, academic or gender diversity, and eligible work experience.

  • Minimum CAT percentile does not guarantee an interview call; it normally allows further consideration.
  • A composite is institute-specific: 60% in Class 12 may produce different points at two IIMs.
  • Some policies also impose school-mark eligibility floors before any composite-score calculation.

IIM Calcutta notes that actual interview cut-offs can exceed its published minimum thresholds.

Stage 2 — The final merit list

Shortlisted candidates usually face a Personal Interview and, where required, a Written Ability Test or another assessment. At this stage, the institute recalculates the final selection score.

Class 10 and 12 are not separate final-score components in this Calcutta formula. This is a clear example of why an academic disadvantage during shortlisting may matter less after a candidate receives a call.

Which IIMs care most about old marks?

QUICK ANSWER: IIMs do not assign a universal percentage to academic records. Some use fixed point tables, some normalize marks by academic category, and some rely more heavily on CAT for the initial shortlist.

IIM Indore’s stated 2026–28 shortlist calculation allocates 10 points to Class 10, 25 to Class 12, and 55 to CAT sections, leaving the remainder for other criteria. Together, the two school stages account for 35 of 100 points.

IIM Calcutta’s CAT 2026 shortlist composite gives 25 out of 85 points to Class 10 and Class 12—approximately 29.4%. These policies refer to different admission cycles, so the chart is illustrative, not a single-cycle institute ranking.

Three institutes worth comparing separately

IIM Mumbai

Its published MBA 2026–28 policy describes shortlisting based on CAT 2025 performance and reservation category, rather than separate school-mark scoring. However, minimum graduation eligibility still applies: typically 50% for General candidates and 45% for eligible SC/ST/PwD candidates. Zero shortlist weightage is not the same as zero eligibility criteria.

IIM Ahmedabad

The referenced framework combines CAT results with an application rating that includes academic history and profile characteristics. Students should check the current academic-category tables and normalization process rather than compare raw marks directly across disciplines.

IIM Shillong

Shillong’s framework includes CAT and an application rating involving academics and work experience. Its experience bands illustrate why time spent in paid employment does not always translate into a steadily higher score.

The eligibility gates that can stop you before scoring

QUICK ANSWER: Some IIMs apply minimum Class 10 or Class 12 marks in addition to CAT thresholds. Falling short of a mandatory floor can make a candidate ineligible regardless of CAT percentile.

These figures are category- and cycle-specific. Professional qualifications and exceptions may be treated separately in the official policy.

Why the 60% gate matters

Consider a General-category student with 58% in Class 10. JAP 2026’s 60% minimum makes that student ineligible for its joint process, which includes IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi and Tiruchirappalli. The student also falls short of Kozhikode’s General-category Class 10 minimum. A high CAT percentile cannot override an explicit minimum eligibility requirement.

Do IIMs use best-of-five marks?

Never assume that your board’s best-of-five calculation will be accepted. Policies may require all subjects listed on the marksheet, potentially changing the aggregate you report. The JAP 2026 FAQ contains examples of the all-subject calculation.

Are newer IIMs easier with low academics?

QUICK ANSWER: Sometimes at the interview-shortlist stage, but the label “newer IIM” tells you very little on its own. Check the eligibility floor, the shortlist formula, and the final-selection formula separately.

Some institutes emphasize CAT performance when forming an interview shortlist, allowing low-academic applicants to compete. Others restore academic marks at final selection or impose school-mark thresholds before shortlisting.

IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Amritsar and IIM Raipur should be evaluated individually rather than grouped together. The original source article identifies significant academic weightage in certain cycles; do not reuse those exact figures without matching them to the relevant published policy year.

DECISION RULE: First check eligibility. Next, check academic weightage. Finally, check the final-merit formula. A low weight costs points; an eligibility gate can stop an application.

What actually counts as “low” academic marks?

There is no universally accepted IIM definition of low school or graduation marks. In some scoring frameworks, performance is assessed in bands rather than on a smooth percentage scale. Consequently, two candidates with noticeably different marks may earn exactly the same component score.

Consequence 1 — below the floor, you stop losing points

In IIM Calcutta’s referenced shortlist framework, Class 10 below 60% scores zero of 10 and Class 12 below 60% scores zero of 15. A Class 12 candidate at 58% therefore earns the same points on that component as a candidate at 45%, though other eligibility requirements still matter.

Consequence 2 — one percentage point can be worth three points

Under these bands, moving from 74.9% to 75% changes the Class 12 score from 9 to 12. For students whose board marks are still being determined, crossing a scoring threshold can be meaningful. Once marks are final, the practical focus shifts to CAT and institute selection.

Does graduation stream change the evaluation?

QUICK ANSWER: Yes. Some IIMs use discipline-specific scoring tables or academic-category normalization. An engineering graduate with 72% and an arts graduate with 72% may not be evaluated identically.

Published approaches include fixed percentage bands, normalized scores within academic categories, and separate academic-diversity points. For instance, Ahmedabad considers academic performance in the context of educational categories. Compare your marks using the relevant institute table, not someone else’s raw percentage.

Four levers you still have

1. CAT performance

Strong CAT preparation is the most important lever within your control. Some IIMs use sectional scaled scores in their composite, so a good overall percentile cannot always compensate for a weak section.

2. Where you apply

The same profile may be competitive at one institute and ineligible at another. Choose programmes carefully during CAT registration and check whether institutes require separate post-result registration. JAP 2026, for example, required eligible invited candidates to complete additional steps.

3. Diversity points

Academic and gender diversity can affect selection formulas, but these are neither universal nor interchangeable. A non-engineering degree may receive points under one policy and a normalized comparison under another. Always read the relevant cycle’s definition.

4. Work experience

Work experience can help, but its value may peak and decline. Shillong’s published 2026–28 bands illustrate this clearly:

Do not postpone an MBA simply to accumulate months of work experience without checking the scoring curve and required proof of employment.

Rahul’s case study: one profile, very different outcomes

STUDENT PROFILE  Rahul: Class 10 = 58% | Class 12 = 62% | B.Com = 68% | Male | 14 months of eligible full-time experience after graduation.

IIM Calcutta — steep academic disadvantage

Shortlist componentRahulPossible maximum
Class 10010
Class 12315
GraduationNot counted—
Gender diversity04
CATUp to 5656
Theoretical composite ceiling5985

Rahul can theoretically reach 59/85 under these scoring assumptions. This is not an admission probability or guaranteed shortlist, but it shows how much composite-score room a strong academic record can create.

IIM Lucknow — a different calculation

A different policy may not use Rahul’s Class 10 directly, while graduation can be compared within an academic group and experience or diversity may help. Some normalization inputs cannot be calculated accurately from published information, so an exact “required CAT percentile” should not be promised.

IIM Mumbai — school results not separately scored in the initial shortlist

Under its cited MBA 2026–28 process, CAT and category determine initial shortlisting rather than separate Class 10 and Class 12 points. Rahul must still meet graduation eligibility and other programme requirements.

JAP 2026 — ineligible under the General-category school-mark floor

If Rahul applies as a General-category candidate, his 58% Class 10 score is below the stated 60% threshold. His CAT percentile cannot erase that eligibility gap.

CASE-STUDY TAKEAWAY: The same candidate can be ineligible in one process and eligible for consideration in another. Ask “which formula can my profile survive?”, not only “what CAT percentile is enough?”

What nobody can calculate precisely

No reliable source can guarantee an IIM interview call at one exact CAT percentile from your school and graduation marks alone. The actual shortlist depends on applicant scores, categories, available seats, and institute-specific calculations. Some formulas rely on scaled CAT scores rather than raw percentiles, which are not interchangeable.

A pre-application checklist

  • ☐ Calculate Class 10 and Class 12 aggregates under the institute’s stated subject rules.
  • ☐  Confirm degree and category-specific academic eligibility.
  • ☐  Check overall and sectional CAT minimums.
  • ☐  Read each institute’s shortlisting and final-selection formulas.
  • ☐  Check whether your graduation discipline is normalized or given diversity points.
  • ☐  Verify eligible work-experience months and documentation.
  • ☐ Complete institute-specific application steps before deadlines.
  • ☐  Prepare for Personal Interviews and any written test if shortlisted.

Before you act on any of this

Admission policy tables, category thresholds and composite weights are revised between cycles. The examples in this guide intentionally identify different cycles where applicable; they must not be treated as a synchronized ranking for one year. Before applying, open the latest original institute document and recheck the applicable numbers.

FINAL TAKEAWAY  The useful question is not simply “Can I get an IIM call with low marks?” It is “Which institutes’ published formulas give my profile a realistic opportunity to compete?”
