The Allahabad High Court has put a stay on the order to revise the CLAT 2026 merit list, providing relief to the Consortium of NLUs. Counselling for the 2026-27 law admissions will now proceed as per the original rankings until the next hearing scheduled for March 9.

Law aspirants across India are closely watching the legal developments at the Allahabad High Court regarding the CLAT 2026 rankings. In a major update, a Division Bench has decided to continue the stay on an earlier order that required a complete revision of the merit list. This means the original ranks given to students after the December exam will remain valid for now, and the admission process will move forward without a total reshuffle of the student list.

The dispute began when a candidate, Avneesh Gupta, challenged the official answer key for a logical reasoning question. A single-judge bench had previously ruled that the Oversight Committee of the Consortium of NLUs was wrong to ignore expert advice on "Question 9." The judge had ordered the Consortium to treat two options as correct and release a new merit list within one month. However, the Consortium filed a special appeal, arguing that changing the ranks of over 70,000 students mid-way would cause "administrative chaos" and be unfair to those already admitted.

Understanding the Stay Order

The Division Bench, led by Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh, agreed that a massive merit list revision during the final rounds of counselling could disturb the entire academic calendar. By granting this stay, the court has allowed the Consortium of National Law Universities to continue with the 3rd allotment list using the original rankings. This brings a sense of stability to students who were worried about losing their allotted seats in top NLUs like NLSIU Bangalore or NALSAR Hyderabad.

Impact on Counselling and Admissions

Because of the legal battle, the admission process was paused for nearly two weeks. Now that the stay is in effect, the Consortium is expected to announce the dates for the remaining rounds of seat allotment very soon. Students who have chosen the 'Float' or 'Freeze' options in previous rounds should check the official portal regularly. The court has clarified that students who already joined their colleges in the first and second rounds will not be disturbed by any future changes.

Conclusion

The situation remains a "temporary victory" for the Consortium as they can continue the current session without the stress of re-calculating thousands of scores. However, the final decision on whether the Oversight Committee was arbitrary in its decision will be made in the next hearing on March 9. For now, candidates are advised to keep their documents ready for the admission process and follow the updates on the official website. The outcome of this case will likely set a strong precedent for how answer key disputes are handled in national-level entrance exams in the future.
