The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is continuing its undergraduate admission cycle for the 2026-27 academic year. Having commenced the process in October, the institute reports a high volume of active users on its registration portal. Prospective students aiming for engineering seats at VIT’s campuses in Vellore, Chennai, AP, and Bhopal are encouraged to submit their forms well before the spring cut-off to ensure eligibility for the April test window.

Application Timeline and Eligibility Standards

The admission window for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is slated to remain open until March 31, 2026. This year, the institute has maintained its standard eligibility criteria, requiring a minimum of 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology for general category students. For candidates from the North Eastern states or those belonging to SC/ST categories, a relaxed requirement of 50% is applicable.

  • Application Deadline: March 31, 2026.
  • Exam Dates: Scheduled between April 28 and May 3, 2026.
  • Age Limit: Only those born on or after July 1, 2004, are eligible to apply.
  • Nationality: Open to Resident Indians, NRIs, and PIO/OCI cardholders.

Exam Pattern and New Marking Scheme

A significant update for the 2026 test cycle is the formal introduction of a negative marking system, a departure from some previous years where no marks were deducted for wrong answers. The computer-based assessment will span 2 hours and 30 minutes, featuring 125 multiple-choice questions. This shift requires students to be more precise in their attempts to maintain a high rank for the competitive admission process.

  • Total Questions: 125 MCQs across five sections.
  • Subject Breakdown: Mathematics/Biology (40), Physics (35), Chemistry (35), Aptitude (10), and English (5).
  • Marking: +4 for every correct response; -1 for every incorrect choice.
  • Language: The assessment will be conducted exclusively in English.

Slot Booking and Fee Structure

The registration fee for VITEEE 2026 is set at ₹1,350 for all Indian applicants. Once the registration phase concludes in March, the institute will open its Online Test Booking System (OTBS). This platform allows students to select their preferred exam date and venue on a first-come, first-served basis. Early applicants generally have a better chance of securing a test center in their home city among the 130 cities where the exam is conducted.

Conclusion

As the 2026 admission season progresses, the focus remains on the transition to the updated assessment format and the streamlined digital registration process. By completing the application early, students can avoid the common technical hurdles associated with last-minute traffic on the VIT portal. The institute continues to update its official website with mock tests and syllabus details to assist aspirants in their final months of preparation.
