The Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED) 2026 and the Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) 2026 registrations are widely anticipated to commence in October 2025.
These national-level entrance examinations, conducted by IIT Bombay, are the gateway to some of the most sought-after design courses in the country, recognized for their rigorous curriculum and cutting-edge design research.
Key Dates and Important Information to Anticipate:
While the official notification detailing precise dates will be released by IIT Bombay on the respective UCEED and CEED websites, based on past trends, candidates can prepare for the following tentative schedule:
- Online Application Form Release: October 2025
- Application Deadline (Regular Fee): End of October 2025
- Application Deadline (Late Fee): Mid-November 2025
- Admit Card Release: Early January 2026
- UCEED & CEED Exam Date: Third week of January 2026 (typically the last Sunday of January)
- Result Declaration: March 2026
Eligibility Criteria (Tentative):
For UCEED (B.Des Programs):
- Age Limit: Candidates born on or after October 1, 2000 (General/EWS/OBC-NCL categories), with age relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates (born on or after October 1, 1995).
- Qualifying Examination: Must have passed or be appearing for their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2025 OR 2026. Students from all streams (Science, Commerce, Arts & Humanities) are eligible.
- Number of Attempts: A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of two times in consecutive years.
For CEED (M.Des & PhD Programs):
- Educational Qualification: Must hold a Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years duration) in Engineering, Design, Architecture, or Fine Arts, or a 4-year professional diploma, or a 5-year B.Arch/B.Plan degree. Those appearing for their final examination by July 2026 are also eligible.
- Age Limit & Attempts: There is generally no age limit, and candidates can attempt CEED multiple times.
Understanding the Exam Patterns:
Both UCEED and CEED comprise two parts, assessing a comprehensive range of skills essential for design education:
- Part A (Common for both UCEED & CEED): A computer-based test (CBT) with objective-type questions, including Numerical Answer Type (NAT), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ). This section evaluates visual and spatial ability, logical reasoning, general knowledge, environmental and social awareness, analytical skills, and observation.
- Part B (Common for both UCEED & CEED): A paper-based test that assesses drawing, sketching, design aptitude, and creative problem-solving skills. Questions in Part B are displayed on the computer screen, but answers must be written/drawn in the provided answer booklet. Part B is evaluated only if a candidate clears the Part A cut-off.
Preparation Strategy:
Given the highly competitive nature of admissions to IITs and other institutes through UCEED and CEED, aspirants should dedicate themselves to thorough preparation:
- Conceptual Understanding: Build strong fundamentals in visual perception, logical reasoning, and general awareness related to design.
- Sketching and Drawing Practice: Regularly practice freehand sketching, perspective drawing, product illustration, and human figures to excel in Part B.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Work on design problem identification and solution generation.
- Previous Year Papers: Solve past UCEED/CEED question papers rigorously to understand the exam pattern, question types, and time management.
- Mock Tests: Take regular mock tests to simulate exam conditions and identify areas for improvement.
