The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) admission cycle has moved into its second phase following the declaration of the Stage 1 written entrance examination results. Candidates who appeared for the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT) on February 8, 2026, can now access their qualified status for the next round. For Bachelor of Design (B.Des) aspirants, the upcoming hurdle is the NIFT Situation Test, a practical assessment designed to test material handling and innovative thinking.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) released the official scorecards and merit list for the written exams on March 20, 2026. This announcement has triggered a period of intensive preparation for thousands of students who have secured the minimum qualifying marks. Unlike the first stage, which focused on theoretical and sketching skills, the Situation Test requires candidates to create three-dimensional models using a specific set of provided materials.

Transition to Stage 2 Assessments

As of today, March 27, 2026, the focus for B.Des candidates is on developing hands-on modeling skills. The Situation Test is tentatively scheduled for the second week of April 2026. During this two-hour exam, students are given materials such as cardboard, wire, cloth, and plastic sheets to build a model based on a specific theme or problem statement.

For postgraduate aspirants, including those seeking admission to M.Des, M.F.M, and M.F.Tech programs, the second stage consists of a Personal Interview. The NTA is expected to release the city intimation slips and specific interview schedules shortly. These interviews are designed to assess the candidate's professional aptitude and subject matter depth in their chosen field of fashion management or technology.

Evaluation and Weightage

The Situation Test holds significant importance in the final merit calculation. For the B.Des program, this practical round accounts for 20% of the total score. The evaluation is not based solely on the final model but also on the creative process and the ability to explain the concept. Candidates are required to write a brief explanation of their model in English, detailing the inspiration and the choice of materials used.

Key Preparation Milestones

Aspirants are currently focusing on "Space Visualization" and "Material Handling," which are core pillars of the scoring system. Experts suggest practicing with everyday items to improve speed and finesse. The ability to create a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing model within 120 minutes is the primary challenge. Since no outside materials or drawing tools are allowed in the exam hall, candidates must rely entirely on the kit provided by the examiners.

The release of the Stage 2 admit cards is expected in the first week of April 2026. Shortlisted candidates must download their call letters from the official portal, exams.nta.nic.in/niftee, to confirm their assigned test center and shift timing.

The declaration of the NIFT 2026 written results marks a pivotal moment for design aspirants across India. With the Situation Test approaching in April, the emphasis has shifted from paper-based creativity to practical execution. Candidates should utilize this window to refine their 3D modeling skills and keep a regular check on the official NTA and NIFT websites for the final schedule and admit card release notifications.
