A recent Right to Information (RTI) revelation has brought to light that the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) amassed around ₹75 crore from candidates appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduates (NEET-PG) 2024. This substantial collection has ignited debates regarding the allocation of funds and the overall management of the examination process.

Significant Revenue Collection

RTI Findings: Dr. Aman Kaushik, a NEET-PG aspirant, filed an RTI seeking details on the total examination fees collected by NBEMS in 2024. The response indicated a collection of approximately ₹75 crore.

Fee Structure: The examination fee was set at ₹3,500 for general category candidates and ₹2,500 for those in reserved categories. This fee structure contributed to the significant total revenue.

Aspirant Grievances

Inadequate Facilities: Despite the considerable revenue, many candidates reported insufficient facilities. Numerous aspirants were assigned examination centers far from their hometowns, necessitating extensive travel.

Exam Postponements: The NEET-PG 2024 exam faced multiple postponements, originally scheduled for March but eventually conducted on August 11. These delays caused logistical challenges and added stress for the candidates.

NBEMS's Financial Practices

Accounting System: In response to inquiries about expenditure, NBEMS stated that it employs a cash-based accounting system. Expenses are recorded only upon receipt of invoices, not when services are rendered.

Transparency Concerns: Aspirants have voiced concerns over the lack of transparency in fund utilization, especially given the high fees and reported mismanagement during the examination process.

Conclusion

The disclosure of NBEMS collecting ₹75 crore in examination fees for NEET-PG 2024 has sparked significant debate. Candidates are calling for greater transparency in fund allocation and improved management of the examination process to ensure a fair and efficient experience for all aspirants.
