Maharashtra reduces Art & Design Diploma duration to 3 years from 2025-26, allowing direct Class 10 entry. This NEP-aligned reform aims to boost employability and accessibility in art education.

In a landmark decision set to significantly reshape art and design education in Maharashtra, the state's Higher and Technical Education Department has announced a major overhaul of its diploma programmes. Starting from the 2025–26 academic year, the duration of eight key art and design diploma courses will be reduced from four years to three years. This transformative policy change, the first in nearly five decades, also includes the crucial reform of making direct admissions available after Class 10 (SSC), eliminating the previously mandatory one-year foundational course.

The revised structure applies to popular diploma programmes such as Applied Art, Drawing and Painting, Sculpture and Modelling, and various specialisations in Art and Craft including Interior Decoration, Textile Design (Printing and Weaving), Ceramics and Pottery, and Metal Craft.

Aligning with NEP 2020 and Boosting Employability:

This significant reform comes as a direct response to the directives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to make art education more accessible, dynamic, and employment-oriented. Until now, students aspiring for these diplomas had to complete a one-year foundational course after their Class 10 examinations before being eligible for the four-year diploma programme. This outdated requirement often discouraged enrollment and prolonged the entry into professional opportunities.

Joint Secretary of the state higher and technical education department, Santosh Khorgade, emphasized that the long-awaited change will not only shorten the duration of these courses but also ensure that art diploma holders gain the same professional and entrepreneurial advantages as their counterparts in other technical diploma fields.

Direct Entry Post-Class 10 and Optional Foundation Certificate:

Under the new regulations, students who have successfully completed their Class 10 (SSC) will now be eligible for direct admission into the three-year diploma programmes. This streamlines the admission process and allows students to commence their specialized art and design education sooner.

For those still interested in a foundational year, the previous one-year preparatory course has been renamed the "Foundation Certificate in Art and Design." This certificate will now be entirely optional, maintaining its one-year (two-semester) format for students who wish to build a stronger base before specializing.

Impact on Students and the Art Education Landscape:

The shortened duration and direct admission policy are expected to significantly benefit students by reducing the time taken to acquire a professional qualification, thereby accelerating their entry into the workforce or facilitating quicker progression to higher degree courses. Graduates of these three-year diplomas will now be better positioned to pursue Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees or other advanced studies, as per existing rules and regulations.

This initiative is anticipated to increase participation in art education across Maharashtra, revitalizing the sector by attracting a broader pool of talent and making creative careers more viable and appealing. Educational institutions offering these diplomas will now undertake curriculum restructuring to accommodate the new three-year format, ensuring the delivery of comprehensive and industry-relevant skills within the revised timeframe.

Aspirants for art and design diplomas in Maharashtra are advised to refer to the official notifications from the Directorate of Art, Maharashtra, or the Maharashtra State Board of Art Education for detailed admission guidelines and updated curriculum structures for the 2025–26 academic year.
