The National Testing Agency (NTA) is overseeing the JEE Main 2026 Session-1 examinations, which are proceeding across 323 cities nationwide. With Paper 1 scheduled for January 21–28 and Paper 2 on January 29, the NTA has maintained a strict schedule to ensure a smooth evaluation for millions of engineering aspirants. Candidates are currently using the advance city intimation slips to organize their travel while awaiting the release of official admit cards.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is successfully managing the rollout of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 Session-1. The pre-exam administrative phase is in full swing, with the NTA having recently released the advance city intimation slips to help students finalize their travel plans. These examinations are being conducted across a vast network of 323 cities in India and 15 locations abroad, including 33 newly added venues to accommodate the growing number of applicants. The rigorous logistics involved in hosting one of the world's largest engineering entrance tests require precise coordination between the central agency and local test administrators.

Official Schedule and Shift Timings

The 2026 January session is structured to provide a balanced environment for both engineering (B.E./B.Tech) and architecture (B.Arch/B.Planning) candidates. The NTA has confirmed that Paper 1 will be held over five days in two daily shifts, while Paper 2 will conclude the session in a single morning shift. This distribution of venues helps manage the high density of students and ensures that technical infrastructure is optimized for the Computer Based Test (CBT) format.

January 29, 2026Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Plan)9:00 AM – 12:30 PMNo Second Shift

Coordination of Exam Day Operations

Ensuring the security and integrity of the examination remains a top priority for the NTA. The complex logistics of the 2026 cycle include mandatory Aadhaar-based verification and multi-level frisking at all entry points. Candidates are required to report to their assigned venues at least two hours before the commencement of the test to complete these biometric and document verification procedures. To maintain a fair testing environment, the NTA has also enforced a strict dress code, prohibiting heavy jewelry, full sleeves, and footwear with thick soles.

  • Reporting Time: 7:30 AM for the morning shift and 1:00 PM for the afternoon shift.
  • Prohibited Items: No electronic gadgets, calculators, or metallic objects are allowed inside the hall.
  • Rough Work: Sheets are provided at the centre and must be returned to the invigilator after the test.
  • Security Measures: AI-based monitoring and CCTV surveillance are active across all centers to prevent unfair means.

Essential Documentation for Candidates

While the city intimation slip provided on January 8 offers early location data, it is not a replacement for the official admit card. The NTA is expected to release the final hall tickets approximately 3–4 days before each specific exam date. These documents will contain the exact address and room number of the assigned venues, along with a unique barcode for entry. Managing the logistics of downloading and printing these documents is the responsibility of the candidate, who must also carry a valid government-issued photo ID and a passport-size photograph to the center.

  1. Printout of Admit Card: Ideally in color, with all details clearly visible.
  2. Valid Photo ID: Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, or Passport.
  3. Recent Photograph: Must match the one uploaded during the registration process.
  4. Transparent Water Bottle: Allowed for personal hydration during the 3-hour duration.

Conclusion

The steady progression of the JEE Main 2026 Session-1 reflects a well-organized effort by the NTA to streamline the entrance process for the next generation of Indian engineers. By expanding the number of available venues and maintaining transparent communication through the official portal, the agency aims to minimize the stress associated with the national-level competition. As the first session concludes in late January, the focus will shift toward the results expected by February 12 and the subsequent logistics of the Session-2 application window in April. Candidates are encouraged to remain focused on their final revision and strictly adhere to the safety and conduct protocols established by the NTA.
