The JEE Main 2026 Session 1 exam window has officially concluded on January 29. Aspirants are now awaiting the provisional answer key and response sheets from the NTA. Check the expected release dates, marking scheme, and score calculation steps for Paper 1 and Paper 2.

The first major milestone of the engineering entrance season has been reached as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 Session 1 officially concluded its eight-day run on January 29. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the examination saw millions of students appearing for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) and Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning) across hundreds of cities in India and abroad. As of today, January 31, the focus has shifted entirely to the official answer key release, with students and parents closely monitoring the NTA portal for the digital response sheets that will allow them to calculate their raw scores before the final result declaration.

Completion of Session 1 and Paper Analysis

The JEE Main 2026 January session was held from January 21 to January 29, maintaining a rigorous two-shift exam schedule. Initial feedback from subject experts indicates that while Chemistry remained largely NCERT-centric and manageable, the Mathematics section continued its trend of being lengthy and moderately difficult across most shifts.

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): Conducted on January 21, 22, 23, 24, and 28, featuring a mix of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Value Questions.
  • Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning): Successfully held on January 29, the final day of the exam window.
  • Attendance Trends: Preliminary reports suggest high student turnout, with the National body ensuring strict biometric security at all centers.
  • Shift Variations: Normalization will be applied to account for the slight variations in difficulty levels observed between the morning and afternoon slots.

Anticipated Timeline for the Provisional Answer Key

With the exam window now closed, the NTA is expected to follow its traditional timeline for releasing the provisional answer key and candidate response sheets. Historically, these documents are made available within 3 to 5 days of the last test date. Candidates use these keys to compare their marked options against the official solutions provided by the National board.

Event DetailExpected Date (Session 1)
Conclusion of ExamsJanuary 29, 2026
Provisional Answer Key ReleaseFebruary 2 – February 4, 2026
Objection Window1st Week of February 2026
Result DeclarationBy February 12, 2026

Once the answer key is live, students will have a brief 48-to-72-hour window to raise objections. For every challenge submitted, a non-refundable processing fee is typically charged, which is only processed if the National subject experts validate the discrepancy.

Score Calculation and Marking Scheme Guidelines

Aspirants are already using memory-based papers to estimate their performance, but the official answer key remains the only valid source for score calculation. The JEE Main 2026 marking scheme has remained consistent, penalizing incorrect guesses while rewarding accuracy in both the MCQ and Numerical sections.

  • Positive Marking: Every correct answer earns the candidate +4 marks.
  • Negative Marking: For every incorrect response, 1 mark is deducted (-1) from the total tally.
  • Unattempted Questions: No marks are added or subtracted for questions left blank.
  • Numerical Section: For the 2026 exam, all five numerical questions in each subject were compulsory, and negative marking was applicable.

Conclusion

The conclusion of the JEE Main 2026 Session 1 marks a period of anxious waiting for the student community. While the National Testing Agency prepares the final data for the provisional answer key, many students have already begun their transition toward preparing for the April session. With the results expected by mid-February, the current window provides a brief respite before the second phase of the JEE journey begins. Aspirants are advised to keep their application numbers ready to access their response sheets as soon as the link is activated on the official website.
