JEE Advanced 2025: Attempt Limit Increased to Three
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has announced an increase in the JEE Advanced attempt limit to three, providing candidates with more opportunities to succeed. To qualify, students must rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main 2025.

In a significant update for engineering aspirants, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has announced that the maximum number of attempts for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced has been increased to three attempts over three consecutive years, effective immediately. This change marks a departure from the previous guideline, which allowed only two attempts in two consecutive years.
New Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced 2025
To qualify for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must meet several eligibility criteria:
- JEE Main Performance: Candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the BE/BTech Paper I of JEE Main 2025. This includes candidates from all categories.
- Age Limit:
- Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2000.
- For Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), there is a five-year age relaxation, meaning they should be born on or after October 1, 1995.
- Class XII Examination: Applicants must have appeared for their Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2023, 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. Notably, candidates who first appeared for the Class XII exam in 2022 or earlier are ineligible to participate in JEE Advanced 2025.
Implications of the Increased Attempt Limit
This increase in the attempt limit provides candidates with greater flexibility and opportunities to improve their scores. It acknowledges the competitive nature of engineering entrance examinations and aims to reduce pressure on students by allowing them more chances to succeed.
Candidates are encouraged to prepare thoroughly for their attempts, as performance in JEE Main is crucial for eligibility in JEE Advanced. The new guidelines are expected to benefit a larger pool of aspirants, potentially leading to increased competition among candidates aiming for admission into prestigious IITs.
The revised guidelines for JEE Advanced 2025 reflect a progressive approach towards accommodating engineering aspirants in India. With three attempts now available, students can strategize their preparation more effectively and enhance their chances of securing a place in one of the country's esteemed engineering institutions.
