IIT Madras Launches Two Cutting-Edge BTech Programs for 2025-26 Academic Year

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the introduction of two new BTech programs for the 2025-26 academic year, aimed at preparing students for emerging high-impact careers in engineering and healthcare technology. These programs will be offered through the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, a pioneering division known for its interdisciplinary research since the institute's founding in 1959.

New BTech Programs for 2025-26:

BTech in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)

Course Code: 412U
Duration: 4 Years
Student Intake: 40

This program is designed to equip students with the skills needed for digital engineering, where physical systems intersect with advanced computational technologies and artificial intelligence. It combines core engineering principles with modern computational tools like machine learning, data science, high-performance computing, and digital twin design. The curriculum also covers foundational subjects such as solid and fluid mechanics, circuits, signals, embedded systems, and material science. Graduates can pursue careers in diverse industries, including aerospace, robotics, automotive, manufacturing, and smart infrastructure, as well as emerging fields like sustainable energy and sustainable computing.

BTech in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME)

Course Code: 412V
Duration: 4 Years
Student Intake: 40

This program focuses on the design and development of medical devices by integrating biomedical engineering with strong foundations in electrical and instrumentation engineering. It includes modern, application-driven topics like Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and web-enabled medical technologies. Graduates will be prepared to innovate in areas such as rehabilitation technologies, AI-driven healthcare systems, and diagnostics, with opportunities to work in clinical device design, medical entrepreneurship, and global healthcare solutions.

Dual Degree Upgrade Option

Both programs offer students the flexibility to upgrade to a five-year Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) through the Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) route, which includes specialized pathways in Computational Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Complex Systems and Dynamics.

Leadership Perspective

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, emphasized the importance of these new programs in bridging the gap between academia and industry, stating, "As technology continues to evolve rapidly, it is critical for higher education institutions to offer state-of-the-art programs that align with Industry 5.0, health technology, and advanced manufacturing. These courses will empower students to become leaders in these transformative fields."

This move by IIT Madras reflects the institute's commitment to preparing the next generation of engineers for high-growth sectors, ensuring its graduates are well-positioned for success in the rapidly changing technological landscape.
