NMC Reaffirms 50% Government Quota MBBS Fee Rule for Private Medical Colleges in 2026-27
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reminded private and deemed medical colleges about the government quota fee rule.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reminded private and deemed medical colleges about the government quota fee rule. This guidance is for the 2026-27 MBBS admission cycle and is based on Section 10(1)(i) of the National Medical Commission Act 2019. Under this rule, 50% of the seats in each private medical college must be affordable. The tuition fees for these seats must match the government college fees in that state. Any form of capitation fees is not allowed. The lower fee applies to students who get admission through the state government quota. These students are selected through the state counseling portal using their NEET UG 2026 ranking. The remaining 50% of seats are for management or NRI quotas and have higher fees.
State-Wise Government Quota Fee List 2026
The table shows the approximate annual government quota fees for the 2026-27 session. The numbers are based on announcements by the State Fee Regulatory Authority. Fees may vary slightly between colleges within the same state.
| State | Annual Government Quota Fee (INR) | Quota Name |
|---|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh | 16,500 | Category A |
| Uttar Pradesh | 18,000 | State Quota (Unreserved) |
| Telangana | 60,000 | Category A |
| Karnataka | 1,53,571 | Government (G) Quota |
| Maharashtra | 1,62,100 | State Quota |
| Tamil Nadu | 5,50,000 | Government Quota |
Southern states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have the lowest tuition fees. Karnataka and Maharashtra have fees in the middle range. Tamil Nadu has the highest fees among the states mentioned.
How Does the 50% Government Quota Rule Work?
The NMC finalized the fee guidelines on February 3, 2022, after consulting with the public. These rules apply to all private and deemed medical colleges recognized by the NMC. Half of the approved MBBS seats fall under the government quota. If the number of government quota seats in a state is less than 50%, the difference is filled by selecting candidates based on merit. These students also pay the same subsidized fee. Selection is done in order of the NEET UG all-India ranking. Colleges cannot charge any extra fees beyond what has been approved. The rule also limits tuition to four and a half years. This means students are not charged for the internship year.
Why Is the Fee Gap Between States So Wide?
Each state sets its own government medical college fee. Southern states have kept fees low for a long time. This is why the government quota fee in these states is under one lakh per year. Northern and western states charge higher government fees, so the linked private college quota fees are in the range of lakhs. The final approved fees for each session are announced by the State Fee Regulatory Authority. There has been uneven compliance across states since the rule was introduced in 2022. Some private colleges initially refused to cut fees for the 50% quota. State authorities have since issued strict orders supporting the NMC directive.
