Indian Institute of Technology Madras has restructured the GATE 2027 exam papers. Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) is no longer a standalone paper. It has been folded into the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper and now appears as an optional section coded XE9. The change is listed on the official portal at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Candidates targeting textile roles must now register for the XE paper instead of a separate TF paper.

Overview of the Paper Restructuring

The revised list includes 30 test papers for GATE 2027. Robotics and Automation (RA) has been added as a new paper this year. IIT Madras has also revised the full syllabus after five years, marking one of the most significant updates to the exam structure in recent times. TF candidates must now register for XE and select a second optional section to complete their paper.

What Changed for Textile Engineering Aspirants?

Earlier, TF ran as a full 100-mark standalone paper. Now, XE candidates must pick two optional sections, with each optional section carrying 35 marks in the paper. XE9 is the new Textile Engineering and Fibre Science section and is one such optional choice within the XE paper. General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics cover the remaining marks in the overall structure.

Registration Process on GOAPS

The application window opens on 14 August 2026 through GOAPS. Candidates must complete verification via DigiLocker and facial authentication. Only one application per candidate is allowed by IIT Madras, and duplicate forms will be rejected without a fee refund. TF aspirants must select the XE paper and pick XE9 among the optional sections while filling out the form.

Impact on Textile Engineering Candidates

The GATE syllabus has been revised after five years to reflect current academic and industry needs. TF's shift to XE aligns textile aspirants with a broader engineering sciences pool, bringing them alongside candidates from other specialized streams under one paper. This restructuring may also reshape how M.Tech admissions are counted at IITs and NITs, since XE candidates now compete within a combined applicant pool rather than a separate textile-specific one.

Steps Candidates Should Take Now

  1. Visit gate2027.iitm.ac.in and read the updated paper list.
  2. Download the revised XE syllabus, especially the XE9 section.
  3. Pick a second XE optional section that matches your academic background.
  4. Note the deadlines and arrange the application fee in advance.
  5. Register on GOAPS between 14 August and 21 September 2026.

What to Track Next

Candidates should watch for the detailed XE9 syllabus and the mock test release schedule from IIT Madras. City allotment for the exam is scheduled for 4 January 2027, and further updates on the revised paper structure are expected on the official portal.
