Delhi University is tackling a seat vacancy crisis with a new mop-up round based on Class 12 marks. Find out what this means for aspirants and the future of DU admissions.

Despite multiple rounds of admissions, Delhi University (DU) is facing a significant challenge, with more than 9,500 undergraduate seats still vacant across its colleges. The unprecedented number of empty seats has prompted the university to launch a special mop-up admission round to fill the remaining vacancies.

The high number of vacancies, particularly in off-campus colleges, has raised concerns among students and faculty members alike. Several student associations have pointed to the centralized Common University Entrance Test (CUET) system as a potential reason for the persistent vacancies, suggesting that it may have created a mismatch between student preferences and seat allocations. Colleges in the off-campus areas, such as Bhagini Nivedita and Aditi Mahavidyalaya, have been particularly affected, with a large number of seats remaining unoccupied.

In response to the crisis, DU has introduced a special mop-up round where admissions will be based on Class 12 marks, a departure from the CUET-based system used in earlier rounds. This move is aimed at providing an opportunity to eligible candidates who were unable to secure a seat earlier. The application window for this mop-up round has already concluded, and colleges are now shortlisting candidates.

For law aspirants, while admissions for the five-year integrated law programs at the Faculty of Law have a separate process based on CLAT scores, the overall trend of vacant seats in DU's admission process highlights the intense competition and challenges in securing a spot in top institutions. Students must remain vigilant and seize every opportunity available to them. The final date for fee payment for the mop-up round is September 13, 2025, marking the last chance for many to secure a seat in one of the university's programs.
