The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the organizing institute for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2026, has announced a crucial extension to the registration deadline. This is important news for all science stream aspirants aiming for admission into prestigious postgraduate programs like M.Sc., Joint M.Sc. - Ph.D., and other post-Bachelor's degree courses offered by the IITs, IISc Bangalore, NITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).

Key Registration Dates and Exam Schedule

The official notification has confirmed that the window for online application has been extended. Aspirants should take note of the following critical dates to ensure a smooth application process:

The application process is conducted exclusively online through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) portal on the official IIT JAM 2026 website. Prospective candidates are strongly advised to complete their registration well before the final extended deadline of October 20, 2025, to prevent any last-minute technical glitches.

Eligibility and Application Process Overview

To be eligible for IIT JAM 2026, candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in the relevant subject or be appearing in the final examination of their qualifying degree in 2026. Importantly, there is no age limit for appearing in the exam. However, aspirants must ensure they satisfy the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) and subject-specific requirements for the particular course they are applying for, as these vary by institute and program.

The application process requires aspirants to:

  1. Register on the JOAPS portal with a valid email ID and mobile number.
  2. Fill out the detailed application form with personal and academic information.
  3. Upload scanned copies of required documents, including photograph, signature, and category certificates (if applicable).
  4. Select up to two test papers (from the seven subjects offered: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH)) and three preferred exam cities.
  5. Pay the application fee online.

The examination will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT) held in two sessions on February 15, 2026. The test features a mix of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

With approximately 3,000 seats available across 89 postgraduate programs in 22 IITs, cracking the JAM 2026 exam is the first crucial step towards a high-flying academic career in the science stream. Aspirants are urged to download the official information brochure from the IIT Bombay website for the detailed syllabus, eligibility criteria, and paper pattern.
