A new chapter has officially begun for thousands of aspiring designers across India as the National Institute of Design (NID) has released the application forms for the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) 2026. This announcement marks a crucial step for students aiming to secure a spot in one of the country's most esteemed design institutions. The application process, which commenced on September 11, 2025, is now live on the official NID admissions portal.

A Two-Stage Selection Process

The NID DAT is known for its rigorous two-stage selection process, designed to identify the most creative and capable minds. The first stage, DAT Prelims, is a written exam that tests a candidate's aptitude, creativity, and knowledge of design principles. Candidates who clear this stage are then invited to the second and final stage: DAT Mains.

The DAT Mains consists of a Studio Test and a Personal Interview. For B.Des aspirants, the Studio Test carries a 60% weightage, while the interview contributes 40% to the final score. For M.Des hopefuls, the interview is given more importance, accounting for 60% of the final score, with the Studio Test making up the remaining 40%. This balanced approach ensures that applicants are evaluated not just on their theoretical knowledge but also on their practical skills and personal vision.

Key Eligibility and Application Details

To be eligible for the B.Des program, a candidate must have passed or be appearing for their Class 12 (10+2) examination from any recognized board. For the M.Des program, a bachelor's degree is a prerequisite.

The application fee varies by category:

  • General, Gen EWS, and OBC candidates: ₹3,000
  • Female candidates (except SC/ST/PwD): ₹2,000
  • SC and ST candidates: ₹1,500
  • PwD and Third Gender candidates: ₹500
  • Overseas candidates: USD 125

Applicants must register online, fill in their personal and academic details, and upload necessary documents, including a photograph, signature, and relevant certificates. It is crucial to ensure all information is accurate, as certain details like name and program choice cannot be edited after submission.

Here are the key dates for the NID DAT 2026 exam that every aspirant should note down:
