In a significant development for medical students across the state, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted a crucial approval for the addition of 450 new MBBS seats in Karnataka for the academic year 2025-2026. This decision provides a major boost to the number of available seats, offering relief to thousands of NEET aspirants.

The newly approved seats will be distributed among nine institutions. A total of 400 seats will be added to eight government medical colleges, with each receiving an increase of 50 seats. Additionally, Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavirmath Medical College (JGMMMC) in Hubballi, a deemed university, has been sanctioned an additional 50 seats.

Background on the Decision

The state government had initially proposed a more substantial increase, including 850 medical seats and the establishment of two new medical colleges. However, the NMC had previously rejected a similar proposal, citing a lack of adequate infrastructure and teaching faculty. While this approval is a positive step, it is important to note that seven other government colleges and two proposed new colleges did not receive the NMC's sanction this time. A request from Sri Siddhartha Medical College for a seat increase was also rejected.

What This Means for Aspirants

These 450 new seats will be a part of the state's seat matrix and will be included in the second round of NEET-2025 counselling. This means that a greater number of aspirants will have the opportunity to secure a seat in a medical college in Karnataka. Students are advised to keep a close watch on the official counselling portal and prepare to fill their choices based on the updated seat matrix.
