COMEDK UGET 2025: Counselling Ends with Over 17,000 Engineering Seats Unfilled
The COMEDK UGET 2025 counselling concludes with over 17,000 vacant engineering seats. Find out the key reasons behind the high number of unfilled seats and what this could mean for aspirants. For the latest admission news, follow Only Education.

The final round of the COMEDK UGET 2025 counselling has concluded, leaving a significant number of engineering seats vacant across various participating institutions. According to reports, a staggering 17,190 out of 26,827 available seats remain unfilled after the completion of Round 4, raising questions about the current trends in student preferences. The counselling process began with a large number of available seats, but only 9,637 seats were successfully allotted to students.
Why So Many Seats Are Vacant
The high number of unfilled seats can be attributed to several factors influencing student choices and the engineering admission landscape:
- Preference for Niche Branches: There is a clear shift in demand towards newer, high-tech branches such as Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI & ML) and Data Science. In contrast, traditional core branches like Civil and Mechanical Engineering are seeing a decrease in popularity, resulting in a higher number of vacant seats.
- Strategic Student Choices: Many aspirants are opting for alternative admission routes, including through the JEE Mains exam, or are being highly selective about the colleges they join. This suggests that factors like institutional reputation, campus placements, and fee structures are playing a more significant role in their final decision.
- Supply Exceeds Demand: The overall supply of engineering seats appears to be outstripping the current demand, a trend that may require colleges and universities to re-evaluate their seat matrix for future academic years.
What's Next for Aspirants?
With the counselling process officially over, all allotted candidates had to complete their final formalities by September 10, 2025.
While there has been no official announcement from the authorities, the possibility of a Mop-Up or Spot Round to fill the remaining seats is high. Aspirants who are still seeking admission should stay vigilant for any potential announcements from the COMEDK authorities regarding further rounds.
