The National Testing Agency (NTA) has invited applications from academicians, educators, researchers and subject specialists for empanelment as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). The experts will support confidential academic activities including question-paper setting, vetting, moderation, translation, answer-key verification and curriculum mapping.

The fresh empanelment exercise is part of the NTA's wider overhaul of its examination processes. In August, the Education Ministry said that around 600 experts had been removed from the NTA examination team, while new experts were being brought on board. The government also announced a four-tier system for checking question papers.

According to the details , the last date to submit applications has been extended to October 9, 2026.

The EoI states that selection and assignment of work will depend on NTA's requirements, the expert's area of expertise, quality of work and availability.

What Will NTA Subject Matter Experts Do?

The new SME panel will support several stages of the examination-development process.

According to the EoI details, the work can include:

  • Question-paper setting
  • Question-paper vetting
  • Moderation
  • Translation
  • Answer-key verification
  • Curriculum mapping
  • Other confidential academic activities

The requirement covers academic work associated with the development and review of examination material.

NTA Bars Applicants With Coaching Links

One of the notable conditions in the new empanelment exercise is the restriction on links with candidate-coaching and test-preparation organisations.

Applicants are required to disclose relevant actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest. The EoI asks applicants about several circumstances, including:

  • Current association with a coaching or test-preparation organisation
  • Association with a candidate-coaching organisation during the previous three years
  • Authorship, editing, co-authorship or endorsement of commercially published preparation material, mock tests, question banks or sample papers for NTA or similar entrance examinations during the previous five years
  • Commercial relationships with test-preparation entities
  • Whether an immediate family member is preparing for or appearing in an NTA examination during the year of empanelment
  • Previous debarment, blacklisting or removal by an examination body for malpractice or breach of confidentiality
  • Ongoing criminal cases or departmental proceedings

These declarations form part of the conflict-of-interest requirements described in the EoI.

What Happens if an Expert Gives a False Declaration?

NTA's EoI states that false declarations can result in immediate de-empanelment and action under applicable laws.

Selected experts are also required to disclose any new conflict of interest that arises during the empanelment period.

NTA's Four-Tier Question Paper Checking System

The new SME empanelment comes after the government announced wider changes to NTA's examination system.

In August 2026, the Education Ministry said NTA had removed around 600 experts from its examination team and begun onboarding new experts. It also announced plans for a four-tier question-paper checking system to strengthen scrutiny before examinations.

The changes followed concerns surrounding the conduct of major examinations, including issues involving NEET-UG and UGC-NET. The Ministry's review also covered examination security and NTA's infrastructure.

NTA's own institutional framework describes test development, assessment and analysis among its core examination-related activities and states that the agency works toward reliable, valid and scientifically developed assessments.

How Long Will NTA SME Empanelment Last?

The empanelment period will be three years.

However, being included in the panel does not guarantee that an expert will receive a fixed number of assignments. NTA will allocate work according to its requirements, the expert's area of expertise, quality of work and availability.

Does NTA Guarantee Honorarium to Empanelled Experts?

No. The EoI states that empanelment does not guarantee any minimum honorarium or a fixed number of assignments.

The actual work assigned to an expert will depend on NTA's requirements and other factors specified in the empanelment conditions.

What Is the Last Date to Apply for NTA SME Empanelment 2026?

The application deadline has been extended to October 9, 2026.

Candidates and academic professionals interested in applying should check the official NTA website and the original EoI document for the complete eligibility requirements, application procedure and applicable conditions before submitting an application.

Why Is NTA Creating a Fresh Expert Panel?

The new empanelment exercise comes during a broader restructuring of NTA's examination operations.

The Education Ministry announced in August that NTA had revamped its examination team, with around 600 experts removed and new specialists onboarded. A four-tier question-paper checking mechanism was also announced.

The new SME EoI adds a formal conflict-of-interest framework to the process of selecting specialists involved in confidential academic examination work.

What Should Applicants Check Before Applying?

Applicants should verify the complete EoI before submitting their application, particularly:

  • Academic and professional eligibility
  • Relevant subject expertise
  • Experience requirements
  • Conflict-of-interest declarations
  • Restrictions related to coaching and test-preparation organisations
  • Confidentiality requirements
  • Application deadline
  • Empanelment period
  • Assignment and honorarium conditions

The detailed eligibility and application conditions should be taken from the original NTA EoI rather than inferred from media reports.

Official NTA Website

Applicants should use the official National Testing Agency website and its tender/notice sections for the original EoI and any subsequent corrigendum.

NTA maintains an official tender section containing its current and archived procurement/EOI documents.
