The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a total of 110 new postgraduate (MD/MS) medical seats across various Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) and institutions in Jammu and Kashmir for the 2025-26 academic year. This expansion, secured through the persistent efforts of the colleges, significantly enhances the opportunities for medical graduates in the Union Territory, with GMC Jammu receiving the largest allocation.

In a major development for the medical fraternity in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially sanctioned 110 new Postgraduate (PG) medical seats for the academic session 2025-26. This approval is a direct result of proposals submitted by medical colleges across the region to either introduce new courses or increase their existing intake capacity for MD and MS programs.

Collectively, the medical colleges in J&K had initially sought the NMC’s permission for a total of 167 new PG seats. While 110 seats were successfully approved, the remaining requests for 57 seats are currently pending, either due to outright rejection by the commission or because the colleges are still required to comply with specific infrastructural and faculty requirements set by the NMC.

This substantial increase in PG slots is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in J&K by addressing the shortage of specialist doctors and providing better opportunities for local medical graduates to pursue advanced studies within the Union Territory.

College-wise Allocation of New PG Seats

The new seats have been distributed across several key medical institutions, with the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu securing the largest share.

This expansion is a massive benefit for NEET PG aspirants, who will now have a broader range of options during the counselling process, increasing their likelihood of securing a seat in their desired specialty and location. Aspiring medical postgraduates must stay alert for the official announcement of the new seat matrix during the upcoming counselling rounds.
