The gateway to India’s most prestigious design institutions is now wide open! The National Institute of Design (NID) has commenced the application process for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) 2026 for admission to its highly sought-after B.Des. and M.Des. programs. Aspiring designers must act quickly, as the last date for online submission of the application form is December 1, 2025.

The official notification also confirms that the NID DAT Prelims exam for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, 2025. This tight timeline means candidates have less than three months to finalize their applications and ramp up their study plan for the initial screening phase.

Crucial Eligibility and Application Details

To avoid rejection, aspirants must carefully review the eligibility criteria before applying.

For B.Des. (Undergraduate) programs: Candidates must have passed or be appearing in the final examination of the qualifying examination from any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities, etc.) in the academic year 2025-26. General category students must have been born on or after July 1, 2005.

For M.Des. (Postgraduate) programs: Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree of minimum three or four-year duration, or a full-time -year Diploma in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/Architecture. The degree/diploma must be completed or scheduled for completion by June 2026.

The online application process requires aspirants to sign up on the official NID admissions portal, fill in personal and educational details, and upload necessary documents. The application fee varies by category, with the General/General-EWS/OBC-NCL fee set at approximately for a single course, while reserved categories like SC/ST/PwD benefit from reduced fees (e.g., ).

Major Change in DAT Prelims Weightage

The most significant update for the NID DAT 2026 cycle is the change in the weightage of the two-stage examination. Historically, the DAT Prelims score contributed to the final merit list, but for 2026 admissions, the role of the Prelims exam has been dramatically modified:

The DAT Prelims will now be ONLY a shortlisting tool. Its score will not count towards the final merit rank.

This means a fundamental shift in preparation strategy is required. Your goal in the Prelims (December 21, 2025) is simply to score high enough to qualify for the second and final stage: DAT Mains.

The DAT Mains will now carry of the weightage for final admission. This stage typically comprises a Studio Test and a Personal Interview/In-Person Sensitivity Test. With the entire selection burden shifted to the Mains, aspirants must place a huge emphasis on developing their hands-on creative skills, portfolio presentation, design rationale, and communication abilities. The Studio Test and Personal Interview are now the absolute determinants of securing a seat at NID.

Aspirants are strongly advised to secure their registration well before the December 1st deadline to avoid any last-minute technical glitches. A focused and intense preparation plan, prioritizing studio skills and interview preparation, is the key to success this year.
