Why Telegram Has Been Restricted in India
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has restricted access to Telegram in India. This restriction will stay in place until June 22, 2026.The message-editing feature on Telegram has also been disabled until June 30, 2026. The order was issued under Section 69A of the IT Act 2000. This action was jointly recommended by NTA and the Department of Higher Education. The restriction is a temporary measure related to the re-exam. NTA has noticed that Telegram is being misused by organized fraudsters involved in leaking exam papers. Several channels were openly selling fake NEET UG papers to worried students. Some of the fake channels had names like PAPER LEAKED NEET and Re-NEET 2026. Some users were also misusing the message-edit feature on Telegram. They edited old posts to add fake papers after the exam had taken place. The original timestamp remained unchanged, making the leak appear genuine.
