The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2026 will take place in a single shift on August 30, 2026.The official notice is available on the NBEMS website at natboard.edu.in. The Union Health Ministry confirmed that 273,183 candidates have signed up for the exam this year, which is an increase of over 12.5 percent compared to the last cycle. The decision to hold the exam in one shift comes after a directive from the Supreme Court to ensure exam fairness. It aims to make the questions the same difficulty level for everyone and give a fair chance to all candidates. The test will be held in nearly 340 cities, with over 1,300 test centers.

NEET PG 2026 Key Highlights

What has changed in the exam pattern?

The exam now has 180 multiple-choice questions instead of 200. The total time for the exam is still 210 minutes, which means candidates get more time to answer each question without extending the overall time. NBEMS said this helps with better thinking and less pressure.

How are exam centers being assigned?

The process of assigning test centers has been changed to make it easier for candidates to choose a location close to home. During registration, candidates now select three preferred states. The address they provide as their correspondence is considered their first preference. The old system where first-come-first-served decided the test city has been replaced with a system where preferences matter. Details about the test city will be shared with candidates about two to three weeks before the exam, giving them more time to plan travel and accommodation.

What security steps have been introduced?

There will be Aadhaar-based identity check during application and on exam day. Iris-based biometric check will be used as an alternative to fingerprint scanning. Question papers will be sent with multi-layer encryption. CCTV cameras and signal jammers will be in place at every center. Computers will be randomly assigned to avoid seat sharing or leaks. There will be central and regional monitoring centers for real-time oversight. Over 60,000 trained exam officials will be deployed. A specific email channel is also available for reporting any unfair practices.

What are the changes in the counselling process for NEET PG 2026?

The Medical Counselling Committee has made the counselling process smoother for 2026. Candidates can now resign from a seat online. They do not need to physically report for admission if they choose to move to a better college. NRIs can upload their documents directly through the counselling portal. The first round of counselling will start on August 4, 2026.The academic session for those admitted will begin on September 8, 2026.
