The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a crucial document for postgraduate medical aspirants: the revised PG Broad Speciality Seat Matrix for the academic session 2025-26. This comprehensive matrix confirms the total number of MD, MS, and PG Diploma seats available across medical colleges in India, bringing much-needed clarity to the NEET PG 2025 Counselling process. For regular updates follow Only Education News.

The Total Tally of Opportunities

The updated seat matrix, compiled from both government and private medical institutions and verified through the Commission's online portal, indicates a significant number of specialized seats available for candidates:

  • A total of 52,173 PG seats are available for Broad Specialist (BS) courses in the current academic year 2025-26. This substantial figure reflects the ongoing efforts to expand postgraduate training and increase the pool of specialist doctors in the country, a vital step for improving India’s healthcare system.

The NMC has instructed counselling authorities to use this uploaded matrix as the valid document for the counselling process, confirming that they do not need to wait for Letters of Permission (LOPs) from individual institutions to begin seat allocation. This move ensures efficiency and transparency in the allotment procedure.

Breakdown of Top Specialities

The seat matrix provides a detailed breakdown of the vacancies across different specialities, with some branches offering a considerably higher number of seats, indicating the greatest demand in the health sector. The top five specialities with the highest number of vacant seats are:

S.No.CourseTotal Vacant Seats
1MD-General Medicine5,654
2MD-Anaesthesiology5,178
3MS-General Surgery5,119
4MS-Obstetrics & Gynaecology4,249
5MD-Paediatrics3,721

Other popular surgical and non-clinical branches also show thousands of seats: MS-Orthopaedics (3,191 seats), MD-Pathology (3,074 seats), and MD-Radio-Diagnosis (2,749 seats).

Extremes in Seat Availability

While high-demand branches boast thousands of seats, several highly specialized or niche courses have minimal vacancies, reflecting their specialized nature or limited infrastructure. Courses with the lowest availability include MD-Bio-Physics and MD-Interventional Radiology, each having only 1 seat vacant. Similarly, certain PG Diploma courses like Diploma in Community Medicine and Diploma - Forensic Medicine/Forensic Medicine & Toxicology also show just a single vacant seat.

For NEET PG aspirants, this seat matrix is the definitive guide for choice filling, requiring meticulous planning and strategic preference entry. Understanding the distribution of seats—from high-volume specialities like General Medicine to the rarest seats in Bio-Physics—is paramount to maximizing their chances of securing a desirable residency position.
