The Three-Stage Selection Process

MITID’s admission process is comprehensive, designed to evaluate not just artistic skills but also analytical ability and design thinking. The final merit list considers performance across all three stages.

  • Phase 1: MIT DET Written Exam:
    • A three-hour aptitude test covering Design Inclination, General Awareness, Analytical & Logical Reasoning, Creative Ability, and Observation.
    • Tests are a mix of Objective (MCQ) and Subjective (Drawing/Sketching) components.
  • Phase 2: Studio Test:
    • A practical, hands-on session to assess problem-solving capabilities, material handling, visualization, and improvisation skills.
    • Shortlisted candidates from the DET are called for this round, typically in May 2026.
  • Phase 3: Portfolio Review and Personal Interview (PI):
    • Candidates present a portfolio of their creative works, which can include sketches, paintings, photography, or digital designs.
    • The PI assesses communication skills, subject knowledge, career motivation, and overall design attitude.

Preparation Strategy and Application Essentials

Success in MITID DET requires a balanced approach focused on both creative output and analytical sharpness.

  • Master the Basics: Practice sketching, rendering, and visual composition for the creative sections. Focus on speed and clarity.
  • Enhance General Awareness: Keep abreast of recent design news, famous designers, art history, and current socio-economic trends.
  • Finalize Your Portfolio: Curate your best and most relevant works. A well-organized, diverse portfolio that reflects your passion and process is crucial for the interview stage.
  • Application Checklist: Ensure you have all necessary documents, including academic mark sheets and relevant certificates (Caste/EWS if applicable), ready for upload as per the size and format specifications. The application fee is ₹3,000 (Indian Nationals).

The February 28th deadline is fast approaching. Aspiring designers are strongly urged to begin the online registration process immediately, gather the required documents, and focus on holistic preparation for all three phases. Track the official MITID portal for any late-breaking updates and immediately start drafting your portfolio.
