Tripura's Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is on the verge of increasing its MBBS seats from 150 to 200, with the National Medical Commission (NMC) giving an "almost sanctioned" approval. This expansion is a key part of the state’s healthcare development mission for the upcoming academic session. For regular updates follow Only Education News.

In a significant development that will open up more opportunities for medical aspirants, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) in Tripura is set to increase its intake of undergraduate students. The State government’s proposal to introduce 50 new MBBS seats at the college has received an “almost sanctioned” status from the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Currently, AGMC enrolls 150 MBBS students each year. With the expected addition of 50 seats, the total intake capacity will increase to 200 MBBS seats per academic session. This increase is a massive relief for students aspiring to pursue medicine, particularly those from the Northeastern region.

Infrastructure is Key to Final Approval

While the verbal approval has been received, a senior official confirmed that the NMC has made the final sanction conditional upon the creation of necessary infrastructure by the state government. The state is now working proactively to meet these requirements, with the aim of rolling out the new seats in the next academic session. This indicates that the college capacity is expanding, aligning with the national goal of increasing the number of qualified medical professionals.

Broader Vision for Healthcare in Tripura

The push for additional seats at AGMC is part of a larger, dedicated effort by the state government to strengthen its healthcare and medical education ecosystem.

  • Doctor Shortage Mitigation: Addressing the critical issue of doctor vacancies is a high priority. In a recent move, the government issued appointment letters to 214 General Duty Medical Officers (GDMOs) who will be posted across various government hospitals. These steps are being taken to ensure the state achieves a doctor-to-patient ratio that is on par with the standards set by the NMC.
  • Infrastructure Upgrade: Beyond the increase in MBBS seats, the state is also focusing on developing its tertiary care facilities. Plans are underway to establish human organ transplant facilities at the premier GBP Hospital and AGMC, following the successful completion of four kidney transplantation procedures at the GBP Hospital.
  • Existing Capacity: Besides the 150 MBBS seats at AGMC and the 115 postgraduate seats it currently offers, the state as a whole has a total of 400 MBBS seats and 63 BDS seats across all institutions. The establishment of a nursing college and a regional pharmacy college further rounds out the state's growing health education sector.

This expected expansion at AGMC is a testament to the continuous development in the medical education sector, offering a brighter future for aspiring doctors and significantly improving healthcare access for the citizens of Tripura.
