In a major relief for thousands of medical aspirants across the country, the National Medical Commission (NMC) chief, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, has announced that India is likely to see a cumulative increase of approximately 8,000 new undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats this academic year. This positive development comes as inspections of medical colleges are being prioritized to complete the assessment process swiftly.

Dr. Sheth’s statement, made in an interview with PTI, aims to reassure students who had concerns about a potential decrease in seat availability. These concerns arose after a recent CBI inquiry into alleged corruption involving officials from the Union Health Ministry and the NMC. While some undergraduate seats may have seen a temporary reduction due to the ongoing investigation, Dr. Sheth confirmed that the overall number of seats is set to increase significantly once the final assessments are concluded.

This expansion is part of a broader strategy to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals and to improve the doctor-to-population ratio. The NMC is focusing on balancing the quantity of seats with the quality of medical education. According to Dr. Sheth, the commission has initiated a process to strengthen accreditation to ensure that colleges meet minimum standards for faculty, infrastructure, and clinical resources.

The announcement is particularly timely for aspirants participating in the ongoing NEET UG counselling, with the second round expected to begin soon. For NEET PG aspirants, the counselling process is scheduled to begin in September, and Dr. Sheth expressed confidence that new seats will be added to the counselling process, providing more opportunities for students.
