In a significant development for medical education in Maharashtra, the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has been granted permission by the Mumbai Medical Education Department to establish a new 50-seat MBBS medical college. This new institution will be situated on the premises of the existing ESIC Hospital in Andheri East, marking a major milestone as the first medical college opened by a Central Government organization in Mumbai.

Key Highlights for Aspirants

The announcement is particularly favorable for aspirants, especially those from economically weaker sections, due to the remarkably low fee structure.

  • Admission Year: The first batch of MBBS students is expected to be admitted in the 2025-2026 academic year.
  • Capacity: The college will offer 50 MBBS seats.
  • Affordable Fees: The regional director of ESIC, Abhilasha Jha, confirmed that the annual tuition fee will be approximately ₹24,000, making it one of the most affordable medical education options in the region.

The establishment of this college, while delayed due to a massive fire incident at the hospital in 2018, is now moving forward rapidly. The ESIC complex, which features a 300-bed hospital (100 beds currently operational), is undergoing swift completion of construction and interior decoration, with an aim to be fully ready by December.

Expanding Mumbai's Medical Footprint

This new college adds to the current landscape of government and civic medical colleges in Mumbai, which includes institutions associated with Nair, KEM, Sion, Cooper, and JJ hospitals, and will provide much-needed additional seats in the city. Furthermore, the central government has also approved a separate 50-seat undergraduate medical college at GT Hospital, further boosting opportunities for medical aspirants in the financial capital.

This initiative by ESIC and the government’s commitment to increasing medical seats is excellent news for high school students and medical aspirants. For the latest updates on college admissions, counselling, and entrance exams, ensure you follow Only Education News.
