Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda recently underscored a transformative period in India's medical education landscape, announcing a monumental increase in both the number of medical colleges and available seats for aspirants. This expansion reflects the government's commitment to bolstering the nation's healthcare infrastructure and addressing the persistent demand for medical professionals. A Decade of Growth in Medical Infrastructure

Speaking at the 50th Annual Convocation Ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, the Health Minister revealed striking figures illustrating the sector’s growth over the past decade:

  • Medical Colleges Soar: The number of medical colleges across India has more than doubled, rising dramatically from 387 in 2014 to 819 in 2025. This proliferation of institutions is key to decentralizing medical training and ensuring regional equity in healthcare.
  • MBBS Seats Cross 1.29 Lakh: Opportunities for undergraduate medical aspirants have surged. The total number of MBBS seats has climbed from approximately 51,000 to 1.29 lakh during the same period. This nearly 153% jump is a direct relief for the thousands of students who appear for the highly competitive NEET UG entrance exam every year.
  • Postgraduate Expansion: The focus has not just been on undergraduate admissions. The number of Postgraduate (PG) medical seats (MD/MS/MDS) has also seen a significant increase, rising from 31,000 to 78,000. This ensures that the newly graduating MBBS doctors have ample opportunities to specialize and fill the country's need for super-specialists.

AIIMS and Future Projections

Highlighting the growth of premier institutions, the Minister pointed out that while the country had only one AIIMS at the end of the last century, there are now 23 AIIMS institutions across India. This expansion aims to extend quality healthcare and advanced medical training to various regions of the country.

Looking ahead, the government plans to continue this momentum. The Health Minister announced that an additional 75,000 seats are expected to be added across both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the next five years.

These figures offer a hopeful outlook for future medical aspirants, promising better access to education and ultimately, a more robust healthcare system for the nation. Aspiring doctors are urged to serve with empathy, uphold high ethical standards, and embrace innovation to meet the country's evolving health needs.
