The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has delivered excellent news to medical aspirants in the state by sanctioning a substantial addition of 600 MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-2026. This significant increase in undergraduate medical seats aims to provide more opportunities for students and bolster the healthcare workforce in Kerala.

With this sanction, the total number of MBBS seats in Kerala, encompassing both the government and private sectors, will climb from 4,555 to a total of 5,155 seats. The government sector, in particular, has seen a rise from 1,755 to 1,855 MBBS seats. This expansion reflects the broader national trend, as the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an overall increase in MBBS seats across India for the current academic year.

Distribution of New Seats Across Colleges

The 600 new seats have been distributed across a total of eight medical colleges, including one brand-new institution. The seat increase is as follows:

Medical CollegePrevious SeatsNew SeatsIncrease
Kerala Medical College, Palakkad (New College)0150+150
Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur150250+100
Travancore Medical College, Kollam150200+50

P K Das Institute of Medical Sciences, Vaniyamkulam200250+50
Kasaragod Government Medical College050+50
Wayanad Government Medical College050+50

This move is especially beneficial for aspirants from the Malabar and tribal belt regions, as the new seats include the launch of the Kerala Medical College, Palakkad with 150 seats, and the allocation of 50 seats each to the new Kasaragod Government Medical College and Wayanad Government Medical College.

The availability of these 600 additional seats for the 2025-2026 academic year directly impacts the NEET UG counselling process for Kerala state admissions, giving a greater number of high-scoring aspirants a chance to secure a seat in one of the state’s prestigious institutions. Aspirants are advised to factor in this increased seat matrix when participating in the choice filling and locking phases of the state counselling.
