In a significant update for the healthcare and education sector in Vidarbha, the Maharashtra government has assured the State Assembly that it will soon resubmit the proposal to establish an Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College in Nagpur. During a legislative session on March 9, 2026, Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar confirmed that the state is "positive" about the project and is currently rectifying technical deficiencies in the previous draft before forwarding it to the Central Government.

The issue was brought to the floor by MLA Pravin Datke, who highlighted that while the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment had decided in June 2025 to set up 10 new medical colleges nationwide—including two in Maharashtra (Nagpur and Pune)—the proposal for Nagpur had been delayed despite other cities having already submitted theirs.

Impact on Medical Education and Infrastructure

If approved, the ESIC Medical College will become Nagpur's third government-run medical institution, joining the ranks of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH).

Key Benefits of the Proposed College:

  • Increased MBBS Seats: The new institution will significantly boost the number of available medical seats for aspirants in Maharashtra.
  • Specialized Care for Workers: The project aims to upgrade the existing 200-bed Workers’ Hospital in Hanuman Nagar, which currently operates primarily as an outpatient department (OPD) facility.
  • Serving Industrial Hubs: The college will provide critical healthcare services to the growing labor population in MIHAN and New Nagpur.
  • Employment Generation: Beyond healthcare, the establishment of a full-scale medical college is expected to create numerous teaching, clinical, and administrative jobs in the region.

Strategic Importance of the Nagpur Proposal

The delay in the proposal sparked questions in the House, especially given that Nagpur is represented by high-profile leaders like Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Minister Abitkar’s assurance of a "revised proposal" indicates that the state is now moving to expedite the construction phase to meet the needs of the 2026-27 or subsequent academic sessions.

Under the ESIC scheme, 40% of seats in such medical colleges are typically reserved for the wards of Insured Persons (IPs), providing a dedicated path for the children of the working class to enter the medical profession. Next Steps for Aspirants

While the technical hurdles are being cleared, high school and UG students should keep an eye on the National Medical Commission (NMC) website for the Letter of Permission (LoP), which is the final regulatory green light required to start classes.
