The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a major expansion of its medical education framework by introducing super-specialty Doctorate of Medicine (DM) courses in Ayurveda. This initiative makes Madhya Pradesh one of the first states to implement the three-year "Super Speciality DM courses" recently introduced by the Ministry of AYUSH. The move is designed to provide advanced clinical and research training to Ayurvedic practitioners, bringing the academic structure of traditional medicine closer to the super-specialization standards seen in Allopathy.

Currently, there are 39 Ayurveda colleges in the state, including 7 government-run and 32 private institutions. These colleges, located in major hubs such as Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior, are now eligible to apply for these advanced programs. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has already issued a circular outlining the requirements for institutions to start these courses for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session.

Specialized DM Ayurveda Disciplines and Eligibility

The introduction of DM programs targets six core medical disciplines that require high-level expertise. These courses will focus on specialized clinical practice, advanced theory, and extensive research. Admission to these programs will be strictly merit-based, requiring candidates to have already completed their postgraduate degree (MD or MS) in a relevant Ayurvedic subject.

The table below provides details on the specialized branches and the admission criteria for the new super-specialty courses.

Course FeatureDetails of DM Ayurveda Programme
Specialization BranchesOncology, Hepatology, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Gerontology, Reproductive Medicine
Duration of Course3 Years (including dissertation and case studies)
Mandatory QualificationMD or MS degree in relevant Ayurveda subject
Admission ModeCompetitive Entrance Exam (similar to AIAPGET)
Institutional RequirementNo Objection Certificate (NOC) from State Govt.
Regulatory BodyNational Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM)

Implementation and Regulatory Process

To begin these courses, Ayurveda colleges and universities must first obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Madhya Pradesh state government. Following this, institutions must submit a formal application to their respective affiliated universities and provide all necessary logistical information to the NCISM for final approval. The curriculum for the DM programs is designed to produce specialists with a deep understanding of Ayurvedic classics while integrating updated knowledge from contemporary medical sciences.

The AYUSH Medical Association has welcomed the move, noting that it will significantly improve the quality of patient care in specialized fields like Hepatology and Oncology. These departments will be established as exclusive units within existing Ayurveda hospitals to ensure focused training and research.

Future Prospects for Ayurvedic Specialists

The launch of these courses is expected to open new career paths for Ayurvedic doctors in research, academia, and specialized clinical settings. By offering training in areas such as Gerontology and Reproductive Medicine, the state aims to address specific healthcare challenges using a holistic yet scientifically advanced approach.

As of March 27, 2026, several top-tier government Ayurveda colleges in Bhopal and Ujjain have already initiated the process of upgrading their infrastructure to meet the NCISM standards for super-specialty training. Prospective candidates should keep their postgraduate credentials ready and monitor the official AYUSH portal for the announcement of the entrance examination dates.

Conclusion

The introduction of DM courses in Madhya Pradesh's Ayurveda colleges marks a transformative era for the Indian system of medicine. By fostering super-specialization in critical areas like Oncology and Hepatology, the state is setting a benchmark for advanced Ayurvedic education. As the 2026-27 session approaches, this initiative will provide a robust platform for MD holders to achieve clinical excellence and contribute to global medical research.
