In Maharashtra, the institutional round for medical colleges in the states might get abolished. This Abolition, if it happens, will obviously be done in the private colleges of the state. In the Government Medical Colleges, the admission will obviously happen through a planned counseling format.
If this step is being taken in Maharashtra, then a certain amount of autonomy would be taken from the Private colleges of Maharashtra. Till now, all the admission process of these private colleges was happening through a centralized counseling system. The structure of the counseling system is framed by the Maharashtra CET Cell.
The same Maharashtra CET Cell has proposed to remove the institutional quota from the private colleges. Based on informal details, the proposal has reported being received an approval from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER). Although it has received an approval , the Directorate of Medical Education and Research has not taken a valid step on the approval.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research is waiting for the approval of the Maharashtra State Government. The Directorate will take a valid step after the response from the State government. How the Maharashtra Government wants the Directorate to take major steps such that it won’t take much in the policymaking process can be seen as their structure of healthcare policy.
If the process is implemented, then all the MBBS and postgraduate medical admissions in the state would happen through a centralized counselling system restrained by the CET Cell.
The Institutional Round is framed in private colleges. The Private Medical Colleges fill their seats through the normal counseling process of the state. After the normal counseling process, the private colleges have the autonomy to fill the vacant seats independently. There are allegations to this process- a lack of transparency and high fees structure.
There are a number of times when the structure of admissions is based on Merit. If the Maharashtra Government takes this step, probably major concerns will be removed from the structure.
