The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially joined IIT Kanpur in offering the Bachelor of Cyber Security (B.Cyber) program, marking a major expansion of one of India's most innovative undergraduate degree initiatives. With this collaboration, aspiring students will now have the opportunity to pursue the specialised cybersecurity programme at either IIT Madras or IIT Kanpur through a common admission process based on a national-level hackathon instead of the conventional JEE route.
The move reflects the growing demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals as digital transformation accelerates across industries and government sectors.
Key Highlights
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Program | Bachelor of Cyber Security (B.Cyber) |
| Institutes Offering | IIT Madras & IIT Kanpur |
| Admission Mode | Common national-level hackathon |
| JEE Requirement | Not mandatory |
| Focus Areas | Cybersecurity, Digital Systems, AI Security, Cryptography, Networks |
| Objective | Build industry-ready cybersecurity professionals |
A Unique Admission Process
Unlike most undergraduate programs at IITs, admission to the B.Cyber programme will not depend on JEE Main or JEE Advanced scores.
Instead, eligible candidates will participate in a common hackathon, where their problem-solving ability, coding skills, logical thinking, and cybersecurity aptitude will be assessed. Students shortlisted through the hackathon will be offered admission to the program at either IIT Madras or IIT Kanpur.
This admission model aims to identify talented students with practical skills and innovative thinking rather than relying solely on traditional entrance examinations.
Why This Program Matters
Cybersecurity has become one of the fastest-growing domains globally due to increasing cyber threats, ransomware attacks, data breaches, and the rapid adoption of digital technologies.
The B.Cyber program has been designed to prepare students for these emerging challenges by combining theoretical foundations with hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving.
Students will receive training in areas such as:
- Cybersecurity fundamentals
- Ethical hacking and penetration testing
- Cryptography
- Secure software development
- Network security
- Artificial Intelligence in cybersecurity
- Digital forensics
- Cloud and system security
The curriculum also encourages interdisciplinary learning, preparing graduates for careers in both industry and research.
IIT Madras Becomes the Second IIT to Join
IIT Kanpur had earlier introduced the B.Cyber program as a first-of-its-kind undergraduate degree focused exclusively on cybersecurity.
With IIT Madras joining the initiative, the program is expected to gain wider reach and offer more opportunities to talented students across the country. Both institutions will collaborate on admissions while leveraging their respective academic expertise and research strengths in cybersecurity.
The partnership is also expected to strengthen India's efforts to build a skilled cybersecurity workforce capable of addressing national and global digital security challenges.
What Students Should Know
Students interested in pursuing the program should keep track of the official admission announcements regarding:
| Admission Stage | Expected Process |
|---|---|
| Registration | Online application |
| Selection Round | National-level common hackathon |
| Evaluation | Coding, cybersecurity aptitude & problem-solving |
| Admission Offer | Based on performance in the common selection process |
Candidates are advised to regularly check the official websites of IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur for detailed eligibility criteria, application schedules, and hackathon guidelines.
Looking Ahead
The inclusion of IIT Madras significantly strengthens the B.Cyber initiative and highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity education in India. By adopting a hackathon-based admission process, the program seeks to recognize practical talent and innovation while preparing graduates for careers in one of the world's most in-demand technology sectors.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, initiatives like the B.Cyber program are expected to play a crucial role in developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals equipped to safeguard digital infrastructure and drive technological innovation.
