In a major step for India’s university sector, IIT Bombay has revealed plans to set up its inaugural overseas branch campus in the United States. Working jointly with SUNY Old Westbury, the move becomes IIT Bombay’s first formal academic footprint beyond Indian borders. Academic activity at the planned site is projected to start in 2027, with an opening slate of certificate courses in sought-after areas like AI, sustainability, and clean tech. As the campus matures, IIT Bombay intends to broaden the portfolio to cover bachelor’s, master’s, and research tracks for learners worldwide.
Engineering and New-Tech Emphasis
The joint effort is intended to boost engineering teaching and investigation within the US. Because SUNY Old Westbury does not presently run engineering offerings, IIT Bombay will add value by shaping engineering coursework, pursuing research, and enabling faculty swaps. The arrangement is also set to support cross-disciplinary research spanning AI, cutting-edge tech, sustainability, and innovation, and to foster academic gatherings and student exchange efforts.
Planned Research Facilities
Beyond teaching offerings, IIT Bombay intends to create research lab facilities at the New York location. Professors from Mumbai are anticipated to visit the US to deliver classes and assist in forming the new academic environment. The effort seeks to give students global exposure while widening joint research possibilities between India and the United States.
Deepening India–US Academic Links
The cooperation was made official via a letter of intent signed in New York. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan praised the move, describing it as an important advance for India–US collaboration across higher education, research, and innovation. This cooperation fits India’s larger aim to internationalize higher education and to raise the worldwide profile of Indian institutions.
A Key Moment for IIT Bombay
For IIT Bombay, this is the first occasion it will create a tangible academic base outside India. The institute believes the project will open fresh avenues for students, researchers, and staff while helping position IIT Bombay as an international hub for engineering and technology learning. As certificate programs are slated for 2027 and degree options will roll out gradually, the American branch campus stands as a significant marker in IIT Bombay’s path toward becoming an institution with stronger global connections.
