As the admission season for the upcoming academic year begins to take shape, the Gujarat government has signaled a massive expansion in healthcare education. While post-graduate students are currently navigating the final reporting deadlines for the NEET PG Round 3, undergraduate hopefuls have received a major boost with the announcement of hundreds of new MBBS seats. This development underscores the state's commitment to bridging the doctor-patient ratio. In a significant move to bolster the medical infrastructure and provide more opportunities for local students, the Gujarat government has issued Essentiality Certificates for three new medical colleges. This strategic expansion is set to add approximately 350 MBBS seats to the state's current seat matrix, pending final approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The proposed institutions will be located in the key hubs of Ahmedabad, Mehsana, and Surat, targeting both self-financed and central government-aided healthcare models.

For regular updates follow Only Education News as we track the NMC inspection dates and final seat allotment notifications.

Location and Seat Distribution

The three proposed colleges will follow different operational models, broadening the spectrum of medical education in the state. According to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Gandhinagar, the distribution is as follows:

College Name / LocationType of InstitutionProposed MBBS Seats
Sardar Patel Medical College, Kathwada (Ahmedabad)Self-Financed150 Seats
Shri Satsangi Medical College, Vadasma (Mehsana)Self-Financed150 Seats
ESIC Medical College, SuratCentral Govt (ESIC)50 Seats

The Approval Process: Race Against Time

The issuance of the Essentiality Certificate is the most critical hurdle at the state level. With the February 3 deadline for these certificates now passed, these three projects have successfully met the state's requirements. The next phase involves rigorous inspections by the National Medical Commission (NMC). If the infrastructure, faculty strength, and clinical laboratory facilities meet the NMC’s "Minimum Requirements for 100/150 MBBS Admissions" regulations, these colleges will receive the "Letter of Intent" and subsequent "Letter of Permission" to begin admissions for the 2026-27 academic session.

Impact on Gujarat's Medical Landscape

Currently, Gujarat hosts approximately 43 medical colleges (including Government, GMERS, and SFI) with a total capacity of around 6,500 MBBS seats. The addition of these 350 seats will:

  1. Reduce Competition: Provide a slight buffer for students in the 500-600 NEET-UG score range who often miss out on state quota seats.
  2. Affordable Healthcare: The ESIC college in Surat will specifically benefit the children of insured workers, providing high-quality education at a subsidized cost.
  3. Regional Development: New colleges in Mehsana and the outskirts of Ahmedabad (Kathwada) will improve local tertiary healthcare services through their affiliated teaching hospitals.

Guidance for Aspirants

Candidates preparing for NEET UG 2026 should factor in these potential seats during their preference filling later this year. While 15% of these seats will go to the All India Quota (AIQ), the remaining 85% State Quota will be a game-changer for Gujarat domicile students.

Keep your documents, including your domicile certificate and category proofs, ready for the upcoming counseling cycle. For detailed insights into the fee structures of these upcoming self-financed institutes, follow Only Education News.
