The GATE 2027 registration process has begun today, August 27, 2026, with the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) going live on the official website, gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), which is organising GATE 2027, will conduct the exam from February 6, 2027. Registration was originally scheduled to start on August 14 but was rescheduled by IIT Madras.

IIT Madras has clarified that these dates are subject to change, so candidates should keep checking the official website for updates.
Key Changes in GATE 2027
- A new Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper has been introduced, taking the total number of papers to 30.
- Electronics and Communication (EC): RA has been added as a second-paper option alongside CS, DA, EE, IN and PH.
- Instrumentation Engineering (IN): RA has been added to the existing combinations of BM, EC, EE and ME.
- Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) has been moved under the Engineering Sciences (XE) sectional paper, with sectional codes under XE, XH and XL also updated.
- Registration through DigiLocker is now mandatory for all Indian nationals; candidates should create or update a verified DigiLocker account before applying.

- Visit the official website at gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
- Click on GOAPS and enter personal, academic and communication details.
- Complete facial registration, upload the required documents and make the payment.
- Submit the application form.
- Download the confirmation PDF and keep a printout for reference.

Candidates may apply for one or two test papers, provided the two-paper combination is among those officially permitted.
Eligibility and Exam Snapshot
- Candidates currently in the 3rd year or higher of an undergraduate degree, or those who have completed a UGC/AICTE-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities, can apply.
- There is no upper age limit for GATE 2027.
- The exam will be a computer-based test with MCQ, MSQ and NAT type questions, comprising 65 questions worth 100 marks in total.
- GATE scores remain valid for three years from the date of result declaration.
Why This Matters
GATE 2027 remains the primary gateway for MTech and PhD admissions at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other institutions, and is also used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment. With registration now open and multiple syllabus and process changes introduced this year, candidates are advised to review the updated paper combinations and complete their DigiLocker verification before starting the application.
