Thousands of foreign medical graduates across the country are entering the final hours of preparation as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) January 2026 session is set to take place today, January 17. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), this mandatory screening test serves as the gateway for Indian citizens with foreign medical degrees to register with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Today, candidates are primarily focused on verifying their center locations and ensuring all mandatory documentation is in order for the two-session computer-based assessment.

Exam Day Schedule and Reporting Protocols

The FMGE is structured into two distinct parts, Part A and Part B, both of which will be administered on the same day. To manage the large volume of aspirants, NBEMS has established strict reporting timelines. Gates for the morning session will open as early as 7:00 AM, with a final closing time of 8:30 AM. Candidates are urged to arrive well before the designated reporting time to complete biometric registration and security frisking, as late entry is strictly prohibited under any circumstances.

  • Part A (Morning Shift): Examination starts at 9:00 AM and concludes at 11:30 AM.
  • Part B (Afternoon Shift): Examination starts at 2:00 PM and concludes at 4:30 PM.
  • Reporting Strategy: Arriving 60 to 90 minutes before the gate closure is recommended to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Biometric Verification: Fingerprint and photograph capture are mandatory steps for every candidate before entering the screening hall.

Mandatory Documents and Dress Code Guidelines

The center authorities have reiterated that entry will only be granted to those who present a clear, printed copy of the FMGE admit card. Candidates must also affix a recent passport-sized photograph in the space provided on the hall ticket. In addition to the admit card, a valid original government-issued photo ID is required for identity verification. Furthermore, a strict dress code is in effect; candidates are advised to wear simple clothing and avoid heavy jewelry, metallic items, or large buttons that might interfere with the security screening process.

  • Accepted IDs: Passport, Aadhaar Card (with photograph), PAN Card, Voter ID, or Driving License.
  • Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, and any stationery other than what is provided at the center.
  • Photograph Specs: The pasted photo must match the one uploaded during registration and should be 35x45 mm with a white background.
  • Reporting Essentials: Ensure the printed admit card is not crumpled or damaged, as barcodes must remain scannable for the test entry.

Shift Timings and Center Infrastructure

The computer-based test will be held across more than 50 cities in India. Each session consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, totaling 300 questions for the day. While there is no negative marking, candidates must secure a minimum of 150 marks to qualify. Centers are equipped with high-speed local area networks, but candidates are encouraged to notify invigilators immediately if they encounter any technical lag during the session.

Conclusion

As the final countdown for the January 2026 screening begins, the emphasis remains on logistical precision and mental composure. By adhering to the official reporting and security protocols, candidates can ensure their focus remains entirely on the 300-question paper. NBEMS is expected to release the results of this session by mid-February, marking the final step for these graduates before they can begin their medical practice or internships within the Indian healthcare system.
