Delhi University (DU) has announced a major change in its postgraduate technical admissions process for the 2026 academic session. For the first time in its history, the University of Delhi will accept GATE scores for admission to its MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering.

The decision marks a significant shift in DU’s postgraduate admission policy and aligns the university with national-level engineering admission standards followed by top technical institutions across India. Candidates with valid GATE scores will now receive first preference during the DU MTech Admission 2026 process.

The move comes after the programme received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), making the MTech course officially recognized under technical education norms.

This announcement is expected to attract highly skilled engineering graduates from across the country who are looking for quality postgraduate education in communication and electronics-related fields.

GATE Scores to Play Major Role in DU Admissions

Until now, Delhi University accepted GATE scores only for PhD admissions. However, starting from the 2026-27 academic session, the university has decided to use GATE scores for MTech admissions as well.

According to university officials, the decision aims to improve the quality of technical admissions by selecting candidates with strong engineering fundamentals and analytical skills. GATE, or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is considered one of the most competitive national-level engineering entrance examinations in India.

Candidates with valid GATE scores will be given priority in the merit list preparation. If seats remain vacant after the GATE-based admission rounds, DU will then consider candidates through CUET-PG scores.

Eligibility Criteria for DU MTech Admission 2026

Candidates applying for the MTech programme must possess a BTech, BE, BSc Engineering, MSc, or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

Eligible branches include:

  • Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC)
  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Instrumentation Engineering (IN)
  • Radio Physics and Electronics Engineering

Applicants are advised to carefully review the official eligibility conditions before applying.

Separate Admission Portal for MTech Candidates

Unlike other postgraduate admissions at Delhi University, MTech admissions will not be conducted through the Common Seat Allocation System for PG (CSAS-PG). Instead, the university will launch a separate dedicated portal for technical admissions.

This separate system is expected to simplify the admission process for engineering aspirants and streamline merit list preparation based on GATE scores.

Why This Decision Matters

Education experts believe this is an important and progressive step by Delhi University. By introducing GATE-based admissions, DU is positioning itself among institutions that prioritize technical aptitude and national-level merit standards.

The decision is also expected to increase competition for the programme and improve the academic quality of admitted students.

As industries increasingly demand specialized technical professionals in communication systems, microwave engineering, wireless technologies, and electronics, postgraduate programmes like this are becoming more valuable for engineering graduates.

Opportunity for Engineering Aspirants

For students preparing for GATE 2026, this announcement opens another prestigious opportunity in the higher education space. Delhi University’s entry into GATE-based admissions could also encourage more universities to adopt similar systems in the future.

Candidates interested in DU MTech Admission 2026 should regularly monitor the official university website for updates regarding application dates, admission guidelines, counselling schedules, and the launch of the dedicated admission portal.
