The National Testing Agency has released the notification for the National Eligibility Test (NET) for the first round of the examination that happens in June. Although the notification focuses much on the Eligibility Criteria, it provides multiple details that are important to the candidates.
The online application process started from 29 April 2026. Candidates, whether they have applied before or not, must apply as soon as possible. This is usually advised to candidates since there are few lag in the website on the last minute of the deadline.
The last date to apply for the examination is 20 May 2026. Candidates should remember that the exam would be taken from 22 June till 30 June. Till last year, the exam was taken for 81 subjects. This year Statistics and Forestry have been added to the list of subjects.
The fact that the exam would be taken for huge number of subjects depict the ideology of the Indian Government to diversify the education system by amplifying these courses in all the major universities of India.
Earlier a large number of students who pursue Statistics remain restricted to other major domains to apply for a Doctorate in the nation. Some students who have done a postgrad in Forestry want to pursue a Doctorate in available places. The National Testing Agency has opened some doors for students to pursue their Doctorate in India.
This signifies that the government might commence the Doctorate in other Domains in India to stop migration. A large amount of migration of bright students happens due to the lack of possibilities in the nation. If the government takes major step in amplifying the number of doctorates in the country, then there would be a reduction of migration.
The National Eligibility Test not only makes students eligible for the PhD but it also provides students an eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Students, if they do well in the exam, can become an Assistant Professor in a certain domain.
