Design Admission Process Advances as Institutes Move to Next Evaluation Stage
Design entrance exams enter the second evaluation phase. Check the NIFT Situation Test, NID DAT Mains, and UCEED 2026 counselling status and dates here.

The 2026 design admission season is progressing into its second and more practical evaluation phase. After the successful conduct of national-level written entrance exams such as NIFT, NID DAT, and UCEED earlier this year, participating institutes have begun narrowing down the pool of candidates. As of late March, thousands of aspirants are shifting their focus from theoretical problem-solving to hands-on creative tests and portfolio reviews. This stage is critical as it carries significant weight in the final seat allotment process for both undergraduate and postgraduate design programs.
At the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the admission cycle has reached a vital juncture. Following the declaration of the written results on March 20, 2026, shortlisted Bachelor of Design (B.Des) candidates are now preparing for the Situation Test. This test, expected to take place in mid-April, evaluates a candidate’s ability to manipulate materials and visualize concepts in three dimensions. Similarly, postgraduate applicants are preparing for Personal Interviews, which will assess their professional aptitude and research interests.
The National Institute of Design (NID) is also moving toward the NID DAT Mains for the 2026–27 session. Candidates who qualified for the DAT Prelims are currently awaiting their specific call letters for the Studio Test and Interviews. The Studio Test is a hands-on examination that involves 3D modeling, drawing, and observational tasks. For the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program, the Mains are traditionally held across various NID campuses in late April.
| Entrance Exam | Current Status | Upcoming Component |
| NIFT 2026 | Stage 1 Results Declared | Situation Test (April 2026) |
| NID DAT 2026 | Prelims Results Declared | Studio Test / Mains (April-May) |
| UCEED 2026 | Results Available | Counselling / Seat Allotment (April) |
| CEED 2026 | Scorecards Released | M.Des Admission Interviews |
| AIEED 2026 | Application Open | Creative Aptitude Test |
The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED), conducted by IIT Bombay, follows a different path. Since UCEED does not have a second-stage practical exam for most participating institutes, the focus for these candidates is the Joint Seat Allocation process. The registration for counselling is expected to begin in the first week of April. Candidates will be required to fill in their campus and discipline preferences based on their All India Rank (AIR).
Preparation for these practical stages is inherently different from the written tests. For the NIFT Situation Test, candidates must build models using materials like cardboard, wire, and cloth. The evaluation centers on creativity, space visualization, and neatness. In the NID Studio Test, the focus is often on the "process" rather than just the final product. Candidates are expected to document their thoughts and explain their design choices clearly.
For postgraduate aspirants through CEED or NIFT M.Des, the interview phase is the final barrier. Many institutes require a digital or physical portfolio that showcases the candidate’s previous work, artistic skills, and problem-solving capabilities. These interviews are scheduled throughout April and May, with the final results usually announced by early June to facilitate the start of the academic session in July.
Conclusion
The design admission process is currently at a stage where practical skills take precedence over theoretical knowledge. With the NIFT Situation Test and NID Studio Tests scheduled for the coming weeks, aspirants must transition to hands-on practice. Staying updated with the official portals of the NTA and various IITs is essential for downloading call letters and participating in the upcoming counselling sessions.
