The Consortium of NLUs has announced that CLAT 2027 registrations will begin in August 2026. Aspiring law students can check the official schedule and eligibility.

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has officially confirmed that the registration process for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 will begin in August 2026. This announcement provides early clarity for thousands of law aspirants who are currently planning their academic transition into undergraduate and postgraduate law programs. As of March 15, 2026, the governing body is reviewing the previous year's examination logistics to streamline the upcoming cycle. CLAT is the premier entrance gate for 24 prestigious National Law Universities across India, offering integrated five-year LLB and one-year LLM degrees.

The early announcement of the timeline allows students nearly five months of advance notice before the application portal goes live. The Consortium of NLUs will manage the entire lifecycle of the exam, from digital registration to the centralized counseling process. While the specific date for the exam has not been fixed, it traditionally takes place in the first week of December. Law aspirants are advised to maintain a consistent preparation schedule, focusing on reading comprehension, current affairs, and legal reasoning. The official website remains the only authorized platform for all document uploads and fee payments.

New Enrollment Guidelines and Application Fees

The registration window is expected to remain open for approximately three months, providing ample time for candidates to complete their submissions. The Consortium has introduced minor updates to the portal interface to ensure a faster verification process for reserved category certificates.

  • Candidates must register using a unique mobile number and email address, which will be used for all future communications.
  • The application fee for General, OBC, and NRI candidates is expected to remain at Rs. 4,000, while SC and ST applicants will pay a subsidized rate of Rs. 3,500.
  • Previous years' question papers and official mock tests will be available for purchase through the candidate dashboard once the registration starts.
  • Digital copies of recent photographs, signatures, and category certificates must be prepared according to specific file size requirements.
  • Candidates can choose up to three preferred test centers from a list of over 130 cities nationwide.
  • The Bar Council of India standards will continue to guide the core eligibility requirements for the undergraduate integrated program.

Eligibility Criteria and Academic Requirements

To qualify for the CLAT 2027 entrance exam, students must meet specific educational benchmarks set by the participating NLUs. These criteria ensure that the candidates possess the necessary academic rigor for the intensive legal curriculum.

  • For the Undergraduate (UG) program, candidates must have passed their 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks.
  • Students belonging to SC and ST categories are eligible for a 5% relaxation, requiring a minimum of 40% marks in their board exams.
  • There is no upper age limit for appearing in the CLAT exam, which encourages students from diverse academic backgrounds to pursue law.
  • For the Postgraduate (PG) program, a LL.B. degree or an equivalent degree with a minimum of 50% marks is mandatory.
  • Final-year students who are appearing for their qualifying exams in April or May 2027 are also permitted to apply.
  • The National Law School of India University and other top-tier NLUs will use these scores for the merit-based seat allocation.
