IIT Roorkee has launched the COAP 2026 portal for GATE-qualified candidates. Registration is mandatory for MTech admissions at all IITs and IISc Bangalore.

The Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) 2026 has officially been launched by IIT Roorkee, marking the start of the centralized counselling process for MTech admissions and PSU job offers. Following the declaration of the GATE 2026 results on March 19, the portal serves as a unified platform for candidates to view and manage admission offers from participating institutes. Candidates with a valid GATE score from 2024, 2025, or 2026 are eligible to register.

It is important for applicants to understand that COAP is not an application portal for individual institutes. Candidates must still apply separately to each IIT or IISc Bangalore through their respective websites. The COAP ID generated during registration must be provided in these individual applications to link the offers to the candidate’s dashboard. Registration on the COAP portal is free of cost and does not require the uploading of any documents.

COAP 2026 Important Dates and Round Schedule

The counselling process is structured into five main rounds followed by five additional rounds to fill any remaining vacancies. The first round of seat allotment is scheduled to begin in mid-May. Candidates must take action on their offers within the specified time window for each round, or the offer will be treated as rejected automatically.

The "Retain and Wait" option, which allows candidates to hold an offer while waiting for a better one, is only available until Round 4. From Round 5 onwards, the process becomes more decisive, and candidates must choose between "Accept and Freeze" or "Reject."

Counselling RoundTime Window to View & Decide
Main Round 1May 11 (10 AM) – May 13 (9 AM)
Main Round 2May 17 (10 AM) – May 20 (9 AM)
Main Round 3May 24 (10 AM) – May 27 (9 AM)
Main Round 4May 31 (10 AM) – June 03 (9 AM)
Main Round 5June 05 (10 AM) – June 10 (9 AM)

Participating Institutes and Selection Process

More than 24 premier institutions, including all major IITs and IISc Bangalore, are participating in the COAP 2026 cycle. Additionally, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like NPCIL utilize this portal to make job offers based on GATE scores. Each participating institute follows its own independent selection criteria, which may include written tests or interviews in addition to the GATE score.

For example, IIT Kanpur has already opened its separate PG admission portal, with the application deadline set for April 13, 2026. Similarly, IISc Bangalore has a deadline of March 31, 2026. Candidates are advised to keep track of these individual deadlines as missing an institute's application will result in no offers being visible on the COAP portal, regardless of a high GATE score.

Eligibility and Decision-Making Options

The primary eligibility requirement is a qualifying GATE score from the current or previous two years. Candidates must be Indian Nationals to register on the portal. When an offer is made, the candidate is presented with three primary options:

  1. Accept and Freeze: The candidate accepts the offer and opts out of all subsequent rounds for further upgrades.
  2. Retain and Wait: The candidate holds the current offer but remains eligible to receive better offers in future rounds. This can be used only twice for the same institute and program.
  3. Reject and Wait: The candidate rejects the current offer and waits for other potential offers in the next rounds.

Conclusion

The activation of the COAP 2026 portal is a significant step for thousands of GATE-qualified students aiming for postgraduate studies at India’s top engineering colleges. While the first round of offers begins in May, the current priority for candidates is to complete their registration on the official website and ensure they submit individual applications to their preferred IITs before the April deadlines. Timely action and a clear understanding of the "Retain and Wait" rules will be essential for securing the best possible academic or professional placement in the 2026-27 session.
