Following the release of the CMAT 2026 results on February 17, top MBA colleges have started their individual counselling rounds. Candidates with high percentiles are now appearing for Group Discussions and Personal Interviews to secure admission for the 2026-2028 batch.

The admission season for management students has reached a busy stage following the recent announcement of the CMAT 2026 result. The National Testing Agency (NTA) released the official scorecards on February 17, 2026. Since then, thousands of students have started applying to various business schools across the country. Unlike some other national exams, there is no single central room for all colleges. Instead, each university manages its own counselling and selection process.

According to the official NTA CMAT portal, more than 41,000 candidates appeared for the exam held in January. Now that the scores are out, students are looking at the "Percentile" rather than just the raw marks. This percentile tells them how many people they performed better than. For example, a 99 percentile means the student is in the top 1% of all test-takers. Top-tier colleges like JBIMS and SIMSREE in Mumbai usually require a very high score, often above the 99.9 percentile.

How the Selection Process Works

Now that the CMAT 2026 result is in hand, the next step for students is the "Selection Round." Most top colleges follow a three-step process:

  1. Shortlisting: Colleges look at the CMAT scores and pick the best students.
  2. Group Discussion (GD): Students talk about a topic in a group to show their speaking skills.
  3. Personal Interview (PI): Teachers ask questions to see if the student is a good fit for the course.

Many private colleges, such as the Goa Institute of Management and K. J. Somaiya, have already opened their application forms. Students must visit the website of each college separately to apply. It is important to check the "Cut-off" marks for each college. A cut-off is the minimum score a student needs to get an invitation for the interview.

College NameExpected Cut-off Percentile
JBIMS, Mumbai99.9+
SIMSREE, Mumbai99.8+
PUMBA, Pune98.5+
Great Lakes, Chennai95+
BIMTECH, Greater Noida80+

Documents Needed for Counselling

During the counselling or interview phase, students must carry their original documents. Colleges verify these papers to make sure all the information provided during registration was correct. If any document is missing or fake, the student might lose their seat.

Commonly required documents include:

  • CMAT 2026 Scorecard and Admit Card.
  • Class 10th and 12th Marksheets.
  • Graduation Degree or Final Year Certificate.
  • Identity Proof (like Aadhaar Card).
  • Category Certificate (if applicable).

Conclusion

The release of the CMAT scores has officially started the race for admission in top management institutes. While the NTA's job ended with the result declaration, the real challenge for students begins now with interviews and group discussions. Experts suggest that students should not only focus on their marks but also practice their communication skills for the final rounds. As the counselling momentum grows, the final merit lists for most colleges are expected to be out by April or May 2026.
