CLAT 2026 first allotment decisions are underway. Candidates must choose to freeze or float their seat by January 15. Check NLU round 1 cutoff ranks here.

With the first provisional allotment list released on January 7, candidates in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT 2026) are currently navigating the critical window for seat acceptance. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has provided a week-long period for students to secure their positions, a process that is scheduled to conclude on January 15. As of today, the portal shows a high volume of activity as high-ranking candidates finalize their choices between locking in their current school or vying for an upgrade in subsequent rounds.

Overview of the Freeze and Float Mechanism

The seat allotment process for CLAT 2026 relies on a structured system of choices that dictates how a seat is held or transferred. These options are mandatory for anyone who has been assigned a university in the first round.

  • The Freeze Choice: When a candidate selects the "Freeze" option, they signify total satisfaction with the current allotment. This action locks the student into that specific NLU, removing them from consideration for any other college in the second, third, or fourth rounds.
  • The Float Choice: The "Float" option is designed for those who have secured a seat but hope to move to a university higher on their preference list. By choosing this, the candidate holds their current spot while remaining eligible for an upgrade if vacancies arise in more preferred NLUs during the next list.
  • The Exit Choice: Candidates who no longer wish to participate in the NLU admission cycle can choose the "Exit" option. This results in the immediate forfeiture of the current seat, which is then returned to the general pool for the next round of candidates.

Round 1 Cutoff Analysis and Trends

The first allotment list has established the initial benchmarks for the 2026 academic year. Institutions like NLSIU Bengaluru and NALSAR Hyderabad continue to show the most competitive closing ranks, often filling the majority of their general category capacity in this opening phase.

The data indicates that movement in the top five NLUs is expected to be minimal in the second round, as most candidates in the top 200 ranks historically choose to "Freeze" their first-round allotment. However, mid-tier NLUs typically see more significant rank shifts as the "Float" transitions occur.

Conclusion

The deadline for the first round of CLAT 2026 admissions is set for January 15 at 1:00 PM. By this time, all allotted candidates must have exercised one of the three options and completed the payment of the non-refundable confirmation fee to the Consortium. Any seat left unaddressed by the deadline will be automatically vacated, and the candidate will be removed from the remainder of the counselling process. The second provisional allotment list is scheduled for publication on January 22, 2026.
