CCMT 2026 Special Round Registration Begins Today: Last Date to Apply is July 18

If you're a GATE-qualified engineering graduate still hoping to land an MTech seat at an NIT this year, here's some good news. The Centralized Counselling for MTech Admissions (CCMT) 2026 Special Round officially opened today, July 14, at ccmt.admissions.nic.in. Conducted by NIT Karnataka Surathkal, this round is essentially a last shot for candidates to grab a seat at NITs, IIEST Shibpur, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

For many students, the regular CCMT rounds don't always work out, whether due to a lower rank, limited seat availability, or simply a change of mind about institute preferences. The Special Round exists precisely for situations like this, filling up seats left vacant after withdrawals and non-reporting from earlier rounds.

Who Can Apply

The Special Round isn't limited to candidates who already went through the earlier CCMT process. Both previously registered candidates and fresh applicants with valid GATE scores from 2024, 2025, or 2026 are eligible to apply. Once registered, only those programmes matching a candidate's qualifying degree and GATE paper will show up as options, keeping the process fairly streamlined. The counselling covers M.Tech, M.Arch, and M.Plan programs across NITs, select IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, and other CFTIs.

Key Dates to Remember

Timelines are tight, so candidates need to move quickly:

• July 13: Tentative seat vacancy list released
• July 14: Special Round registration and fee payment begins
• July 18, 5:30 PM: Last date for registration and fee payment
• July 20, 5:30 PM: Choice filling closes
• July 22: Special Round 1 seat allotment
• July 24, 5:30 PM: Document verification for Round 1 ends
• July 27: Special Round 2 seat allotment
• July 29, 12:30 PM: Document verification for Round 2 ends

How to Register

The registration process is fairly straightforward if candidates follow it step by step:

1. Visit the official portal, ccmt.admissions.nic.in
2. Log in using existing CCMT credentials, or register as a fresh candidate
3. Fill in personal, academic, and GATE score details
4. Pay the registration and participation fee online
5. Select institutes and programmes, arranging them in order of preference
6. Lock in choices before the July 20 deadline and save the confirmation

Check the Seat Vacancy List Before Choosing

Before locking preferences, it's worth spending time on the tentative seat vacancy list published on July 13. This list reflects seats that opened up due to withdrawals, non-reporting, or unfilled quotas after the regular rounds concluded. Since the final seat matrix can shift slightly once document verification wraps up, candidates are advised to treat this list as a guide rather than the final word.

Why This Round Matters

For many aspirants, this is genuinely the last opportunity within CCMT to secure an MTech seat at a reputed institute. It's not just for candidates who missed out earlier, fresh GATE-qualified applicants can also step into the process at this stage, making it a meaningful window rather than a mere formality.

What Candidates Should Do Right Now

With deadlines stacked close together, the smartest move is to act early rather than wait till the last moment. Reviewing the seat vacancy list, completing registration before July 18, and locking choices thoughtfully by July 20 should be top priorities. Round 1 allotment results are expected on July 22, so candidates should keep documents ready in advance to avoid last-minute stress during verification.
