The CAT 2025 exam pattern is officially out. Learn about the sectional structure, marking scheme, and why the official mock test is your key to mastering this prestigious management entrance exam.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have officially confirmed the exam pattern for this year's Common Admission Test, bringing clarity to the structure that will define the exam on November 30, 2025. This news provides a clear roadmap for your final months of preparation.

The structure is expected to remain consistent with last year, ensuring that a significant change in the pattern won't disrupt your study plan. The CAT exam, with a total duration of 120 minutes, will be divided into three distinct sections, each with a strict time limit.

Understanding the CAT 2025 Exam Pattern

The CAT exam will consist of 68 questions spread across three sections, with a sectional time limit of 40 minutes each. The order of sections is fixed and cannot be changed during the exam.

SectionNo. of QuestionsTime Allotted
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)2440 minutes
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)2240 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude (QA)2240 minutes

The total marks for the exam will be 204. For every correct answer, you are awarded +3 marks, while a wrong answer in a multiple-choice question (MCQ) results in a -1 mark penalty. Importantly, non-MCQ questions (Type in the Answer, or TITA) have no negative marking, a detail that management aspirants must strategically leverage.

The Role of the Official Mock Test

While the full-length CAT exam is still months away, the release of an official mock test by the conducting IIM is imminent. This is not a full-fledged mock test with new questions but rather a crucial guide to the exam interface, providing a realistic feel for the test environment, the on-screen calculator, and navigation between questions.

Taking this official mock test is a non-negotiable step. It helps you get accustomed to the time constraints and the flow of the computer-based exam. Alongside this, it is essential to practice a series of unofficial mock tests from reputable sources. Experts suggest taking at least 25-30 mock tests in the final months to perfect your time management, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and master your test-taking strategy.
