Calcutta University is overhauling its CULET admission process due to fairness concerns. The university may hire an external agency to conduct the entrance test for law admissions.

Following a series of complaints regarding anomalies and a lack of transparency in the law admission process, the University of Calcutta (CU) is reportedly planning a major overhaul of its Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET). The university's decision comes in the wake of a report highlighting significant safety and fairness concerns within the admission procedure for both the 5-year and 3-year LLB courses.

According to sources, the university's department of law has been conducting the entrance test and publishing merit lists internally, a process that has drawn scrutiny. Complaints emerged that students with lower merit ranks were gaining admission to government-aided colleges, while more deserving candidates were being overlooked.

To address these issues and restore faith in the system, the university is now considering involving an external examination agency to conduct CULET from this academic year onwards. This move is aimed at bringing back transparency and ensuring that admissions are strictly based on merit.

Potential Changes and Upcoming Schedule:

While the university is still finalizing the new process, some key developments are on the horizon for CULET aspirants:

  • External Agency: The introduction of an external agency is expected to standardize the exam's security and marking process, minimizing any potential for manipulation.
  • Delayed Admissions: The university has not yet initiated the admission process for its law courses, as it is awaiting renewal from the Bar Council of India (BCI). The renewal fee was recently paid, and the university expects to receive the necessary approvals shortly.
  • Tentative Exam Date: The CULET 2025 entrance test is still tentatively scheduled to be held in the third week of August, but the application and exact exam dates will only be released after the new process is finalized and approved.

Students and parents are advised to regularly check the official Calcutta University website, caluniv.ac.in, for the official notification on the revamped admission process and the revised schedule for CULET 2025.
