In a major development for law aspirants in West Bengal, Calcutta University has officially announced that admissions to its prestigious 5-year B.A.LL.B. program will now be conducted through a computer-based online entrance test. The decision, which has been approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI), marks a significant step towards ensuring greater transparency and fairness in the admission process for its 14 affiliated law colleges.

The university's move comes after a period of scrutiny and public demand for a more robust admission system. To uphold integrity, the new online test, known as the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET), will be administered by an external agency. This change means that the university's own law department will no longer be directly involved in the setting of question papers or the publication of merit lists, a shift from its previous practice.

Key Details for Aspirants

The decision has been met with positive reception from aspirants who have been awaiting clarity on the admissions process. According to university officials, an official notification inviting applications is expected to be released within the next seven days. The online exam will consist of 100 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) covering key sections such as General English, General Knowledge, Current Affairs, and Logical Reasoning. The exam will have a duration of 2.5 hours with no negative marking.

This transition aims to streamline the process, reduce the scope for irregularities, and ensure that admissions are based purely on merit. Aspiring lawyers are advised to begin their preparation for the online format and keep a close watch on the official university website for the application notification.
