In a late-stage development offering a ray of hope to thousands of medical aspirants, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced the addition of 65 new MBBS seats to the Round 3 seat matrix for the NEET UG Counselling 2025. This move slightly expands the opportunities for candidates vying for admission into undergraduate medical courses across the country.
Immediate Action Required for Choice Filling
The most crucial takeaway for all candidates participating in the Round 3 counselling is the immediate need to review and update their choices. The MCC has extended the window for Choice Filling and Locking until October 16, 2025 (11:55 PM). Candidates must seize this opportunity to incorporate these new colleges and seats into their preference list to maximize their chances of securing a seat.
Key Dates for Round 3:
- Choice Filling/Locking Deadline: October 16, 2025 (Locking opens at 4:00 PM on October 16).
- Seat Allotment Result: October 18, 2025.
- Reporting/Joining: October 19 to October 27, 2025.
Breakdown of Added Seats
The 65 new MBBS seats are distributed across three medical institutions in different states, covering both government (All India Quota) and private (Deemed University) categories.
| S. NO. | Institute Name | State | Quota/Category | No. of Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | J R Medical College and Hospital | Tamil Nadu | Deemed/Paid Seats Quota | 50 |
| 2 | Autonomous State Medical College, Amethi | Uttar Pradesh | All India Quota (AIQ) | 8 |
| 3 | Rampurhat Government Medical College | West Bengal | All India Quota (AIQ) | 7 |
The bulk of the increase comes from J R Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu, which added 50 seats under the Deemed/Paid Seats Quota. This is particularly important for aspirants aiming for private medical colleges, as it affects the paid-seat rankings. Additionally, the inclusion of 8 AIQ seats from Autonomous State Medical College, Amethi (U.P.), and 7 AIQ seats from Rampurhat Government Medical College (West Bengal) will slightly benefit candidates with higher ranks under various reservation categories (UR, SC, EWS, OBC, ST).
Why This Addition is Important
The Round 3 of counselling is critical as it is often the last opportunity for candidates to secure a seat through the main allotment process before the Stray Vacancy round. The addition of seats, even a modest number like 65, can shift the cutoff ranks, especially in the highly competitive All India Quota.
Aspirants who were on the borderline in previous rounds or who are currently holding a seat and wish to upgrade must meticulously revise their choices. The ability to modify preferences until October 16 gives them two extra days to re-evaluate their strategy based on this updated seat matrix.
